4 KIUC CURRENTS ENERGY SERVICES Light Up A Life The Power to Provide KIUC partners with the Kaua‘i Food Bank to build awareness about hunger on Kaua‘i and to encourage food donations for families on the island. KIUC wants to help Light Up A Life of those in need by collecting food and providing highquality, energysaving light bulbs to help with members’ energyefficiency efforts. KIUC is again partnering with the Kaua‘i Food Bank by becoming a dropoff center. Through December, KIUC will accept food donations— including tuna, pasta, rice, canned meat and canned vegetables—at the main KIUC office in Līhu‘e, located at 4463 Pahe‘e St. About 300 members visit the KIUC offices daily to conduct utility business. If only a small number of those bring a food donation with them, it will make a tremendous difference. The food donation can be made at the main KIUC lobby Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Light Up A Life program will provide two free compact fluorescent light bulbs for a minimum $5 food donation made at the KIUC office in Līhu‘e. The bulbs are high quality and each can replace a standard 75watt incandescent bulb. In a typical home, this bulb will save about $50 a year in electric costs. “These are tough economic times,” said KIUC Member Services Manager Barbara Nagamine. “And KIUC wants to help get food to those who need it the most. We are hoping the community can help accomplish that.”
By Paul Daniels A Picture’s Worth... As we end 2011 and look forward to 2012, I’d like to feature two local businesses: The Wine Shop and Koloa Deli. Sort of a two for the price of one! Actually, with the help of John Hodges (JCH Hawai‘i Lighting), these two businesses took simultaneous steps to become more energy efficient by installing energyefficient LED track lighting technology. From my perspective, the connection with these two businesses doesn’t end with the lighting. They are neighbors, located in the same building (directly across from the Koloa Post Office) and you might say they complement each other, in their service. First we have the Koloa Deli, an Italianstyle deli an assortment of fresh baked breads, with assorted meats and cheeses to make delicious sandwiches, and salads to choose from. Pictured at the deli, from left, Dee Morris, Ron Magrin (owner), Jimbo (friend behind the counter) and manager Lea Tarigawa. Although Ron owns Valley Building Enterprises (a construction business), his longtime love for things Italian, stems from his grandparents and greatgrandparents who immigrated to the United States, having come through Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty) New York. Ron learned by watching his grandparents create delectable food, and that is what led him to open his deli a year and a half ago. They service local lunch go’ers and visitors looking for that special something to eat as they travel the island. Second The Wine Shop, a wellstocked wine and spirits shop and winner of the 10th annual Best of Kaua‘i by readers of the Garden Island newspaper. Opened five years ago by owners Ellen and Dan O’Connell (Dano), this wine, gifts and gourmet outlet is an incredible place to visit for those with a discerning palette. With more than 20 years in the hospitality industry, The Wine Shop seemed to be the perfect transition for Ellen and Dan. As I visited with Ellen, she was just completing a beautiful gift basket, another feature of their services. (A side note: If you have a hard time reading wine labels, Dan is the only authorized dealer on Kaua‘i for “Clic” reading glasses.) Thank you to Ron Magrin at Koloa Deli and Ellen and Dan O’Connell at The Wine Shop for helping Kaua‘i become more energy efficient. As I first mentioned about being complementing businesses: to you lovebirds, for that next romantic picnic to the beach at sunset, or to the mountains of Koke’e, take along a delicious lunch from Koloa Deli, then walk 20 feet to The Wine Shop, for that perfect wine pairing. And if your romance progresses to the next level, The Wine Shop can provide you with a marriage license. How’s that for service!
