Controlling Your Energy Use Energy conservation practices benefit all KIUC members and our communities by reducing energy costs and improving the quality of our environment. To help our members save energy and money, Energy Wise offers eight energy-saving programs designed specifically to help manage energy costs. KIUC offers the following energy-efficiency programs to help participants better manage their energy costs. The programs have resulted in lowered energy costs, with an improved quality of life and a cleaner environment. For simple no-cost or low-cost energy management strategies to help reduce your total monthly electric consumption, try this Residential Energy Wise Practices Checklist. Efficient Appliance Replacement Rebate Program - This incentive program is designed to encourage members to discard older, less efficient appliances and replace them with new, energy-efficient models. A $50 rebate incentive is paid to members who retire older, less efficient refrigerators, clothes washers and freezers. This is a residential program. New construction does not qualify. Applications are available from Sears, Home Depot and Kapa'a Electric & Appliance and from KIUC. Appliance Meter Service - The KIUC Appliance Meter Service (AMS) gives members a way to meter and record the amount of electricity consumed by most common electric appliances. This helps them identify high consumption appliances that can be targeted for replacement. Information also can be used to modify the use of various appliances and help reduce consumption. Meters may be borrowed for up to seven days and are available through member service representatives at the main office. They come with easyto-read instructions and a support phone number. 14 KAUA‘I ISLAND UTILITY COOPERATIVE Solar Loan Program - KIUC offers zero-interest loans to members who want to change their existing electric water heater to a solar water heating system. The loan also is available for members who want to replace an existing nonfunctional solar water heater at least 15 years old. KIUC pays the interest for the participant. The participant repays the principal over five years. No down payment is required. KIUC has partnered with Kaua‘i Community Federal Credit Union and the County of Kaua‘i Housing Agency to provide funding for the loans. Solar Rebate Program - KIUC provides an $800 rebate incentive for members who want to replace their existing electric water heater with a solar water heater. The rebate is also available for members who want to replace an existing nonfunctional solar water heater at least 15 years old. New construction qualifies. Home Visits - When questions about high bills are difficult to resolve, a home visit is available at no cost to the member. KIUC’s residential energy specialist collects information about energy use and the appliance mix by phone to determine if a home visit is necessary. Members may call KIUC to ask for a home visit and to acquire general electric use information. The specialist visits the home, helps determine conditions causing consumption, and provides general educational and program information that may help the member reduce electric use. New Member Lighting Program - Three 20-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs are provided to each new KIUC residential member at no cost. KIUC also offers programs that are not energy related, called Member Advantage Programs. These programs provide services that meet the special needs of our members, and are not likely to be obtained from other resources on Kaua‘i. Qualifying Member Appliance Replacement Program - The purpose of this program is to help qualifying lowincome seniors (age 60+) reduce their residential electricity use by replacing older, less efficient refrigerators and defective electric water heaters with new, more efficient ones at no cost to the member. Qualified participants must own their homes, own the refrigerator and meet federal poverty guidelines for the program year. The refrigerator to be replaced must be at least 11 years old and be the primary refrigerator. There can be no additional refrigerators in the home. This program is offered in partnership with the County of Kaua‘i. Members must contact the County of Kaua‘i Offices of Community Assistance Agency on Elderly Affairs to determine eligibility. Light Up a Life - This program provides free compact fluorescent light bulbs to each member who drops off a food donation for the Kaua‘i Food Bank during its spring and holiday food drives. KIUC wants to help those in need and provide members help with their energy-efficiency efforts.
Service Activations and Disconnects Service activations may be done by coming into the Lihu‘e office or calling 246.4300 Monday-Friday (except holidays) 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are new to the cooperative and opening an account at an existing location, you will need the following: 1. A valid picture ID (for security purposes) 2. Necessary information to complete a service application 3. A signed membership or membership declination form (determines if you are eligible for patronage capital allocation and distributions when they occur); the fee to become a member is 1 cent 4. Pay a credit deposit that will remain on your account until 12 consecutive, timely payments have been made; in the 13th month, the credit deposit plus interest will be applied to your account; if you disconnect service prior to the end of the 12-month period, the deposit will be applied to the closing bill; if there is a balance, a check will be sent to you 5. A $20 service fee will be included on your first bill If you already have an account with KIUC, you may make application over the phone to assume service at an existing location. You will need to: 1. Verify the last four digits of your Social Security number (for security purposes) 2. Provide necessary information to complete a service application 3. If necessary, pay a credit deposit for the new location before service can be started; this will need to be paid in the Lihu‘e office or via Western Union Speedpay (see Section 9, Paying Your Bill) 4. A $20 service fee will be included on your first bill If you require temporary power during the construction phase of a new home, you will be billed at a commercial rate (Schedule G) and will need to provide: 1. A valid picture ID (for security purposes) 2. Information to complete a commercial service application at our Lihu‘e office 3. Sign a membership or membership declination form if you are new to the cooperative (determines if you are eligible for patronage capital allocation and distributions when they occur); the fee to become a member is 1 cent 4. The name and telephone number of your electrician 5. Information regarding the type of service required— underground/overhead and 100/200 amperage (you may confirm this information with your electrician) 6. A copy of the Kaua‘i County building permit or permit number - this may be obtained by having your electrician call the County Building Division, 241.4854 (failure to provide this information may delay service connection) 7. A copy of the county-approved site/plot plan, complete with tax map key and lot number 8. A copy of the Condominium Property Regime (CPR) map, if applicable 9. A $60 material and labor charge if your temporary service will later be moved to a permanent location; this fee is waived if your temporary service is in the same location as your permanent service 10. A refundable $40 credit deposit if you have not already established credit with KIUC 11. A $20 service fee will be included on your first bill The property must be identified with your service address (visible from the street). You may call County Engineering, 241.4883, to request an address. Underground service will require you to schedule a trench inspection with KIUC, 246.4300 (at least two working days’ notice is needed). Once the residence/electrical work has been given a final inspection by the county, remember to have your service changed from temporary to permanent service so your billing rate may be changed from commercial to residential. Application for permanent service may be made once the residence is completed and requires the following: 1. A valid picture ID (for security purposes) 2. Information to complete a residential service application at our Lihu‘e office 3. Completion of a membership or membership declination form if you are new to the cooperative (determines if you are eligible for patronage capital allocation and distributions when they occur); the fee to become a member is 1 cent 4. The name and telephone number of your electrician 5. A copy of the final electrical inspection from the County of Kaua‘i or the building permit number - this may be obtained by having your electrician call the County Building Division, 241.4854 (failure to provide this information may delay service connection) 6. A copy of the county-approved site/plot plan, complete with tax map key and lot number, if not already provided for temporary power 7. A copy of the Condominium Property Regime (CPR) map, if applicable and not provided previously 8. A refundable credit deposit if you have not already established credit with KIUC 9. A $20 service fee will be included on your first bill 10. Scheduling a trench inspection with at least two working days’ notice, 246.4300, if underground service will be moved from the temporary location Disconnects may be requested by calling 246.4300 Monday- Friday (except holidays) 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will need to call at least two working days before the required date. You may come into the Lihu‘e office, but the same two working days’ notice is required. If you call, you will need to provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.
