KIUC IN THE COMMUNITY KIUC’s Ninth Annual Membership Meeting KIUC’s Renewable Portfolio 14 KIUC CURRENTS By Anne Barnes Photos by Shelley Paik
KIUC’s program to generate at least 50 percent of its energy from renewable resources such as biomass, hydroelectricity and photovoltaics (solar) by 2023 is driven by our members’ demand to manage the cost of energy, reduce dependence on imported oil and increase the amount of energy generated from Kaua‘i’s own resources. So states KIUC’s 2010 annual report. The theme referred to the coop’s efforts to give our members the clean, renewable energy they have asked for by growing our portfolio of renewable projects and helping members understand that both board and management are working proactively to balance environmental concerns with a continuing need to deliver reliable power by working toward a mix of generation resources. About 400 members attended the annual meeting Sunday, September 25, with several arriving early to claim 5pound bags of rice—the door prize for the first 300 attendees. In addition to the rice, all members received a recycled ChicoBag and a copy of the 2010 annual report. A dinner of chili and rice, fried chicken, green salad and dessert from Pupus Etc. in Hanapepe was served by coop employees and ‘ohana before the meeting. Entertainment was provided by Kalaheo School’s Sunshine Express—the group that has been entertaining at KIUC’s annual meetings since its first meeting of the membership in November of 2002!
