Blake Krings
Besides the fact that the Humphrey St.
Francis football team should vie for another
Class D-2 state title, there is at least one
other general consensus at St. Francis High
School: Blake Krings is tough.
That, at the very least, is expected from
whoever is the Flyers’ top linebacker. Last
season, Krings racked up 105 total tackles
and two interceptions. But instead of leaving
the field after every third down, Krings
walked back to the huddle and orchestrated
St. Francis’ offense as the starting quarterback.
The positions aren’t closely related, besides
from the fact that in Humphrey, you
have to be tough to play both.
“Offensively, you have to be able to avoid
tackles and be quick. At linebacker, you
have to be tough because you are going
against 250-pound linemen,” Krings said.
“You wouldn’t think a quarterback would
be a linebacker. But you have to be tough at
both positions.”
Offensively, Krings does the job with his
arm and legs. Last year he had 373 yards
rushing and 12 touchdowns, while throwing
for 626 yards and 10 scores.
The Flyers fell short of the state championship
last year, losing to Howells in the
quarterfinals. Krings expects his team to be
back this year, and preseason polls have St.
Francis ranked No. 4.
“St. Francis has a lot of tradition, and you
have to work really hard,” he said. “To be
Adrian Bruhn
The surroundings may have changed a bit
for Adrian Bruhn, but don’t expect that to affect
this hard-hitting player.
In 2010, Bruhn set a Leigh volleyball single-season
record with 230 kills and a record
of 26 kills in a single match. She also compiled
a .825 hitting percentage, had a .875
serving percentage, was a perfect 19-for-19
on assist attempts and had five blocks.
This season, the Panthers will be co-oping
volleyball programs with Clarkson and will be
known as the Patriots, but Bruhn won’t let
that change her playing style. She fully intends
on sticking to her strength.
“I’ve always been stronger with hitting,”
she said. “I’ve worked really hard to be a good
hitter, but that’s definitely my stronger point.”
Another strong point of Bruhn’s is her
leadership. She was the leader of Leigh’s
team, and will continue to be looked upon to
provide leadership this season, as there are no
seniors and just one junior competing from
Clarkson.
“I’m vocal, and I like to lead. When people
get down, I don’t like that, so I always get
them back up,” Bruhn said. “Everybody makes
mistakes, so I guess I just tell them it’s OK. I’m
very loud and very vocal on the court.”
The Patriots are going to need a go-to player
like Bruhn this season, as the Patriots will
be competing in Class C-2. Leigh and Clarkson
both played in D-2 last season, so the
competition will be a big step up from what
picked out of all the good athletes out
there, it is an honor.”
But perhaps the most important question
is this: If Krings lined up against himself
during one-on-one tackling drills,
who would win?
“I feel a lot tougher on defense, so in the
alley, I’d say linebacker. Playing linebacker,
it is a completely different attitude,” he
said. “Open-field tackling? Maybe not so
much.”
the Leigh and Clarkson teams were used to.
Bruhn is anxious for the challenge.
“It’s going to be a new season. We’re going
to play new teams. I want to take that to our
advantage,” she said. “We were D-2, but now
we’re C-2. We need to really pull out and get
some big, tough wins against C-2 teams.”
Troy McCuiston
Watch out record books, Troy McCuiston
is back.
Last season, the centerpiece of the Newman
Grove football team set two individual
records and helped the team set a third. This
year, he has his sights set on a couple more.
In 2010, McCuiston split time between
running back and quarterback, and all he
did was rush for a single-season, schoolrecord
1,703 yards on an eye-popping 8.7
yards per carry. He was named first team
all-state while leading the Bluejays to a
school-record eight wins and into the second
round of the Class D-1 State Playoffs.
He made his presence felt on defense
while playing corner, grabbing a schoolrecord
seven interceptions in 2010. With
those numbers, it’s no surprise that Mc-
Cuiston has high expectations for himself
on both sides of the ball.
“Offense comes more natural to me, but I
think I’m just as good at defense,” he said.
“I’m not the biggest guy, but I think I can
play just as well on defense as I can at offense.”
This season, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound
McCuiston has his sights set on Newman
Grove’s career rushing record of 3,771 held
by Ryan Rudloff, the younger brother of new
Bluejay head coach Matt Rudloff. To set the
record, McCuiston will need to run for
1,466 yards this season.
To make things even more interesting,
McCuiston will be playing quarterback exclusively
this season, but don’t expect that
to keep him from using his feet as a weapon.
Jordan Chohon
Jordan Chohon is a team leader in more
ways than one.
The Scotus Central Catholic volleyball
player is not only an experienced senior, but
also the team’s starting setter, a position that
naturally lends itself to leadership.
Chohon is a three-year starter for the
Shamrocks, and she has racked up 1,562 assists
in her career. In 2010, she had 48 ace
serves, 80 kills and 26 blocks. She also was
named second team all-state in Class C-1. But
despite her ball skills, Chohon identifies
something else as her biggest strength.
“Leadership. I’m the setter of the team, so I
touch the ball every single play,” she said. “I’ve
played for three years, so everybody’s kind of
looking to me to do the job.”
Chohon will need to be extra strong in the
leadership category this season, as Lauran
Hellbusch is the only other returning starter
from the 2010 Scotus squad.
“We are not experienced this year ... (Other
than Lauran and myself) everyone else is new,”
Chohon said. “They’ve been on varsity, but
they haven’t played or started. Lauren and I
will definitely have to step it up and be leaders
this year.”
Youth may be a hindrance to the team, but it
definitely will not be an excuse for a Shamrock
program that is a consistent perennial power.
Chohon knows first-hand about high expectations,
as she was the setter on Scotus’ 2009
state championship team.
“I feel like I’m a stronger runner than I am
a thrower,” he said. “But I run the ball out of
the quarterback position just as much as I
throw the ball.”
With McCuiston at the helm, the Bluejays
should again make a run at the playoffs and
perhaps a new school record in wins. There
is pressure on the speedster to excel, but he
doesn’t let that slow him down.
“Now and then there’s pressure, but it
doesn’t really get to me too much,” he said.
Chohon said expectations are always high at
SCC, and this year is no different.
“We have a target on our back every year
because we’re always trying to do better than
we did the previous year,” she said. “Last year
we got third at state, so we obviously want to
do better. We’re shooting for a state title.”

Lindsay Larson
Lindsay Larson can best be described in one
word: Aggressive.
The leader of the Cross County softball
team uses an aggressive nature at the plate
and on the base path, and is a constant thorn
in the side of the Cougars’ opponents.
Last season, she hit .533 with 24 RBIs. Hitting
out of the leadoff spot, Larson usually
wastes little time in taking swings, and as her
average suggests, she usually makes solid
contact.
“I try to be really aggressive and usually go
after the first pitch,” she said.
Unfortunately for the opposition, Larson is
just as dangerous on the bases as she is at the
plate. In 2010, Larson stole 43 bases, which
was just two shy of the Class C state record.
“I lead off, so when I do get on base to start
(coaches) usually have me steal second, and
I’m very aggressive on the bases so I usually go
to third and sometimes steal home, too,” she
said. “I like being aggressive, and my speed
helps me a lot.”
In addition to being a statistics leader for
Cross County, Larson is also a leader on the
field. Playing in center field, Larson serves as
the leader of the outfield, and she tries to fill a
vocal leadership role on the team whenever
she can.
Larson is a three-year letterwinner for the
Cougars. She received honorable mention for
Class C all-state as a freshman. She was first
team all-state as a sophomore, and was
named first team super-state and first team
Shelbi Oberhauser
For three years Twin River has seen what it
has in Shelbi Oberhauser. The strong-hitting
Titan roamed center field for her first three
seasons, while being one of the top batters on
the team. So entering her senior campaign,
the Titans decided to make things interesting.
This year, Oberhauser will still bring the
power at the plate, but has moved to shortstop
to fill a team void. But it is all in a day’s work
for this softball player.
“It has definitely been different. It gives you
a whole new perspective of the game,” she
said.
That new perspective hasn’t affected her
charisma or character, as Oberhauser has settled
into a leadership role with her fellow Titans.
“I’ve started since my freshman year, and
we had a lot of leaders that year,” she said.
“This year, it is a big honor to have that position
of leadership.”
Last year, Oberhauser hit .470 on the season,
racking up 43 RBIs and scoring 35 runs.
She had 22 extra-base hits, with 12 doubles,
seven triples and three home runs. On the base
path, she had 15 steals, not once being caught.
Oberhauser burst onto the scene, easily
eclipsing all her previous bests, with only two
extra at-bats on the year.
Heather Sabata
Please excuse Heather Sabata for not cowering
in the corner. The Columbus High softball
player enjoys the high expectations placed
on her, and her team, entering the 2011 season.
“I feel a lot of pressure, but with me, pressure
is a good thing,” she said. “It keeps me
going.”
In 2010, the Discoverers rounded a big corner,
setting a school record in season wins
with 24. That success has carried over
through summer softball, and pressure is on
the team to take that next step and reach the
state tournament.
Sabata has just one thing to say: Bring it on.
“From last year, we all think we feel a lot of
pressure as seniors to keep this (momentum)
going,” she said. “We have been working hard,
and I think we are ready to play.”
To say Sabata will have an important role
might be the understatement of the century.
Columbus will rely on her heavily in the circle
and at the plate. Last year, Sabata went 7-5 as
a starter with a 3.32 ERA. With a bat in her
hand, however, things went rather differently.
Sabata hit .430 with 37 RBIs, hitting four
home runs on the year.
She doesn’t always try to hit a home run,
but knows it once she has hit one. It seems
that the cliché is true: Chicks do really dig the
Karo Garcia
If Karo Garcia continues to improve like
she has throughout her entire career, she is
in for a very big season in 2011.
Results usually reflect hard work, and
the Columbus High cross country runner
knows a thing or two about hard work.
Garcia is the top runner for the Discoverers
now, but she wasn’t even on the varsity
team as a freshman. Her improvement has
surprised a number of people, including
herself.
“I surprise myself a lot,” she said. “My
freshman year, I started as one of the slowest
runners, and now I’ve moved up to being
one of the fastest runners.”
In cross country, it is common for runners
to peak early and then level off or even
decline later in their careers. But Garcia
has done the opposite, transforming from
an average JV runner to a top varsity runner.
Garcia said the reason for her success
was simple: Hard work.
“I worked really hard the summer of my
sophomore year,” she said. “Working hills
and intervals, just working on my speed.”
Garcia had an outstanding year in 2010,
finishing in the top ten in every meet except
one. Her finishes last year were
fourth, third, seventh, first, sixth, fourth,
sixth and 22nd. At the state meet, Garcia
placed 22nd with a time of 15 minutes, 48.3
second while helping the Discoverers to an
eighth-place finish. She finished with the
second-best season ever by a varsity girls
cross country player, and 506 girls in varsi-
Softball
Cross Country
2011 Super Seniors
all-state by the Omaha World Herald.
This season, Larson is hoping her aggressive
play leads the Cougars to an even bigger season
than they had in 2010.
“Last year, we got district runner-up,” she
said. “Hopefully (this year) we make it to state
and just keep the team going and have a good
record.”
Twin River expects to be at the state tournament
once again this year, and is ranked No. 6
in Class C in the preseason rankings. A lot of
things will factor in the success of the Titans,
but for Oberhauser, things are pretty simple.
“As a senior, I know I have to step it up and
lead my team at the plate and be a good hitter,”
she said.
long ball.
“I love taking those hard hits ... and hopefully
it is over the fence,” she said.
ty events last year.
Competing and doing well are motivating
factors for Garcia, but she said she also
enjoys running as just a leisure activity.
“Running relaxes me a lot,” she said. “I
get a lot of satisfaction from it.”
But for one more year, Garcia is anxious
to compete.
“I’m going to push everybody so that we
can make it to state and place at state,” she
said.
Aysha Janssen
The limelight is there, all Aysha Janssen
needs to do is walk into it. But don’t feel
disappointed if the Lakeview volleyball
player looks around first, making sure it
shouldn’t be cast somewhere else.
With the steady success the Viqueens
have had during her time in high school, it
would be easy for Janssen to develop a
strong ego. But this is one senior who is
more worried about her team’s success
than her own.
“When the opportunity is right, I hope
my team trusts me enough to come to me,”
she said. “But if it would be easier to get a
kill from the right, I’d rather we go there.
Whatever works best for the team. It doesn’t
matter who is getting the kill or the
point, as long as we are winning the game.”
Being humble is never a bad thing, but
one thing seen last year is that Lakeview
went to Janssen a lot, and she shined. In
2010, she had 248 kills, 16 blocks, 27 ace
serves and 255 digs. Calling her multifaceted
doesn’t quite do justice. But when
it comes down to it, Janssen just likes to
take her swings.
“I’d probably say (I’m best at) hitting.
When our back row gets a good pass, I can
usually put it away,” she said. “I rely on my
team for everything else. We have a pretty
good mixture.”
This year, the Viqueens will try to break
Brooke Nelson
When the Newman Grove volleyball
team takes the floor this season, there is
no doubt Brooke Nelson will be a key part
of the attack.
The outside hitter can get the job done
in a variety of different ways, and she has
the statistics to back it up. Last season,
Nelson had an 83 percent hitting percentage.
She had 260 kills, which brought
her career total to 466. With numbers like
that, it’s not surprising what Nelson
identifies as a favorite part of her game.
“I’m a hitter, and I love to hit it,” she
said. “I’ve worked on it, but I’ve worked
on many other things, too.”
Nelson produces for the Ladyjays in a
number of different ways. She had 55 ace
serves in 2010, and her career total is 105.
She also has 400 career digs to her credit.
It’s obvious Nelson has the skills necessary
to lead a team. But she also is very
much into the mental aspect of the game.
“I try to keep my head up,” she said “I
also try to keep everyone else’s head up
and into the game.”
Nelson will be looking to fill a leadership
role for Newman Grove in 2011, and
that will be vital to a Ladyjays team that
lost some key seniors from the 2010
squad. Newman Grove went 18-10 last
season and advanced to the district finals.
The Ladyjays suffered a heartbreaking 3-
2 season-ending loss to Winside, and
Nelson is hoping she and the team can reload
for another shot at the state tourna-
Alex Micek
Alex Micek doesn’t care much about
the accolades. She is focused on one
thing: State.
“As a team, I really think we can make it
to state,” she said. “That’s our goal.”
But that’s not to say she isn’t trying to
get her name on a plaque or two. The
Osceola volleyball player already holds
three school records (23 kills in a match,
kills in a season and blocks in a season)
and has her eyes set on four more: Blocks
per match, ace serves per match and season,
and a digs record.
Last year, Micek tallied 241 kills, 53
blocks, 68 ace serves and 157 digs. As a
sophomore, she had 187 kills, 45 blocks,
33 ace serves and 67 digs. She has been
named Second Team All-State the last
two years, but is more concerned about
her team’s goals than her own.
“I don’t think about it during the season.
I just play my own game and let the
rest play out,” she said.
After knocking on the door the last two
years, Micek hopes her senior year will finally
be the season for the Bulldogs to
break through.
Micek knows she will have to play a key
role for that to happen.
“We are really young this year,” she
said. “There are only a few of us returning
Maddie Scow
Maddie Scow is a nice person. It seems
that people generally enjoy her company.
But step onto the volleyball court against
the 6-foot-1 middle hitter for the Shelby/Rising
City volleyball team, and be
afraid. Be very afraid.
“I think I am a pretty intimidating person,”
she said. “I feed off it, and my teammates
feed off of it.”
Scow was pivotal last season, as the
Huskies advanced to their first state tournament.
She tallied 187 kills and a ridiculous
146 total blocks, along with 39 ace
serves and 58 digs.
“I’m not much of a digs person,” she
said.
With such a menacing demeanor and
those stats at the net, no one is going to
argue with her.
“I pump everybody up, because I have
so much emotion for the game,” she said.
This year, Scow expects her team to
contend once again for a state tournament
berth, as the team returns a majority
of its players from last year’s squad.
Replacing former Telegram Super Senior
Lindsay Coffin at libero will be tough, but
all Scow asks is for her team to put the
ball where she needs it.
She can take it from there.
“I think I will have a bigger role. Most of
through the subdistrict door and into a
district match. A key is always communication,
but that shouldn’t be a problem
with Janssen on the court.
“Our team is usually really vocal, and I
just want to be vocal out there,” she said.
ment this season.
“I’m going to try to excel from last year.
I just want to keep myself in the game and
(my teammates) in the game,” she said.
“It’s going to be a little bit tougher this
year with some good seniors gone from
last year. I’m going to try to help others
build up and fill those spots.”
who started.”
Back to the records. If they fall, they
fall, but Micek is probably watching one a
little more closely.
“My sister holds the digs record, so
there is some extra incentive there,” she
said.
our limelight was on Lindsay last year,
and all the great things she did,” Scow
said. “If we can get it in the front row, I
can take charge up there.”

■ SEASON OUTLOOK: We will have a few more
players returning with experience. We haven’t
had that in a few years. I think our size will be
better and our team speed will improve. WE still
have some questions on some of our positions,
but have many more ideas than we have had in
the last couple years. We should have a year
where we can form an identity on offense and
defense rather than try to come up with something
new all the time. We will need to have a few
sophomores step up for us.
