as the most stable and reliable friend in this region of<br />
the world. He returned home with a promise from the<br />
Australian Government of aid in establishing a faculty<br />
of medicine in Kuala Lumpur.<br />
The Sydney University conferred a similar award (November)<br />
1960 - January, found the Tunku in New Zealand. He<br />
spoke there of the common heritage linking the Malay<br />
and Maori people, and returned with a $1 million grant<br />
for a civil servants' training centre. In October left on a<br />
mission of peace to Canada and America. A few<br />
minutes before his departure, he disclosed that his<br />
main purpose in visiting the U.S. was connected with<br />
the West Irian dispute. On his way home, he stopped<br />
for a few days in Holland. A month later, he flew<br />
to London for talks on Malaysia. It was then that<br />
the joint commission to ascertain the views of the Borneo<br />
people on the matter was decided upon.<br />

Responsible for Malaya's contributing troops to the United<br />
Nations Congo Force.<br />
The Cambridge University conferred the Honorary degree<br />
of Doctor of Laws (June). Won the Ramon Magsaysay<br />
Award for Community Leadership.<br />
In August, the "Emergency" was declared ended. The<br />
country had been cleared of the bulk of Communist<br />
terrorists.<br />
1961 - Attended Prime Ministers Conference in London (March)<br />
Opposed Apartheid Policy of South Africa by championing<br />
the cause of the non-whites on South Africa and<br />
organised a boycott ofSouth African goods.<br />
Made a historic speech on his concept of Malaysia to the<br />
Foreign correspondents' Association in Singapore (May<br />
27th) Awarded the C.H. by Her Majesty, the Queen of<br />
