1916 - Became a pupil of the Penang Free School in the second<br />

standard at the age of 13.<br />

1919 - Awarded a Kedah State Scholarship which took him to<br />

England to prepare for the University entrance examination.<br />

1922 - Student at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge University<br />

on a Kedah scholarship. (October 1922 to December,<br />

1925).<br />

1924 - Graduated, Bachelor of Arts, Cambridge University—the<br />

first Kedah Prince to gain a degree in any British University.<br />

1927 - Founder and first Secretary of the Malay Society of Great<br />

Britain. Kesatuan Melayu United Kingdom (K.M.U.K.)<br />

Tengku Abdul Rahman, later Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the<br />

first Yang di - Pertuan Agong was its first President.<br />

1931 - Returned to Malaya from England. Joined the Kedah<br />

Civil Service . District Officer. Met Mr. Eugene Chen,<br />

then Foreign Minister of China - both of whom became<br />

great friends.<br />

1936 - District Officer, Sungei Patani. Received Nehru at<br />

Butterworth.<br />

1938 - Returned to England to study Law but studies were<br />

interrupted by the outbreak of World War II.<br />

1940 - Deputy Director of Civil Defence for South Kedah.<br />

1941 - In December during the British retreat he diverted tactfully<br />

his father's car going to Penang and kept the Sultan<br />

at Siddim Valley, Kulim to be with his people in that<br />

time of National emergency.<br />

During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, when the<br />

Japanese returned Kedah to Siam, he served as Superintendent<br />

of Education and Director of Passive Defence until<br />

the reoccupation, September, 1945.<br />

1946 - Opposed the British Government fusion of Malay States<br />

and Colonies to form the Malayan Union which deprived<br />
