4 TH GRADE
We are approaching the end of Saint William’s 1 st
quarter, and 4 th graders have continued to progress
and work very hard on their schoolwork.
In Religion, we have been studying the first three
Commandments, the Our Father, and using our classroom
rosaries to pray to Mary. We are excited that
4 th graders will be assisting with the liturgy at our all
-school Family Mass on October 27 th .
Students have been enjoying a mix of stories in
Reading from a variety of genres. We just completed
our first novel study on Because of Winn-
Dixie. We celebrated with a “Winn-Dixie Day,”
where we drew pictures of our favorite characters,
watched the Winn-Dixie movie, and partied like the
characters in our book by sharing egg salad sandwiches,
pickles, “Dump Punch,” and lozenges.
As in past years, 4 th graders will be again writing as
pen pals to residents of Bethesda Home. We will
look forward to saying “Boo!” to our friends as we
march over on October 31 st for our annual all-school
Halloween Walk. Residents love being able to see
all of the students in costume.
Have you heard about Peaces? He is a rainbowcolored
stuffed animal that travels home with 4 th
graders each week. Students write a daily journal
about Peaces’s travels. When he returns, students
share the details of his visit. Peaces then travels on
with another 4 th grader, but it has been hard for students
to say “good-bye!”
Math has been challenging as we have already studied
place value, comparing/ordering numbers, rounding,
addition, subtraction, mathematical patterns,
counting/making change with money, and basic algebra.
4 th graders will next be reviewing and practicing
multiplication and division.
4 th graders have been carefully studying the levels
and branches of government in Social Studies. Since
the Presidential Election is happening on November
6 th , exploring the election process has been especially
meaningful.
Students love to participate in learning activities in
Science. We have used microscopes to study cells in
onionskins, built an organizer showing the (continued)
relationship between plants, herbivores and carnivores,
and studied decomposers with the growth of
mold on bread. We have just planted radish seeds
and will observe their growth with overcrowded conditions.
Many of 4 th grade’s Art projects are posted on Artsonia,
an educational website that hosts students’
artwork. Go to www.artsonia.com and search for
Saint William School. Explore and enjoy the creativity
of our talented class. Student projects will continue
to be posted throughout the school year.
WE ARE CALLED!
Our parish will be holding a training and preparation
session for all those that are interested in answering
the call to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
