WEDNESDAY 17
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY | PROJECT LABS
14:30 – 15:30 Towards Commerce 3.0
Project Lab 2 Creating a More Inclusive Global Economy Through
Technology-Enabled Trade
Brian Bieron, Senior Director, Global Public Policy, eBay Incorporated
Annie Lescroart, Senior Manager, Global Stakeholder Engagement,
eBay Incorporated
Marcelo Olarreaga, Professor of Economics, University of Geneva
Drawing upon pioneering research comparing eBay global trade data and offline
data, this session explains how technology creates a more inclusive economy
by empowering small businesses to participate in cross-border trade, with
particular benefits for developing countries. Combining the Internet with other
technologies, such as mobile applications, transforms trade by connecting
remote sellers to world markets, and creates the conditions for social innovation
and entrepreneurship. The technology tools employed by eBay Inc. are central
to these inclusive trading patterns, offering a practical demonstration of the role
that the private sector can play in development. The session will also present
findings on the potential developing country welfare gains that would follow
from facilitating more online trade, and set out policy recommendations on how
to advance this inclusive trade agenda.
