It updates the 2002 Communication on ‘Trade and Development’, which set the basis of the EU’s trade and development policy for a decade. The Communication analyses changes in the world’s economy, reviews the EU’s achievements in the last decade and, on this basis, updates EU policy principles and sets new policy orientations for the next decade. In addition, the Commission will present its July 2012 Aid for Trade Monitoring Report. Aid for Trade is an important trade and development policy instrument. The EU and its Member States are longstanding providers of development assistance in support of increased international and regional trade. The 2012 Report shows that in 2010, the EU and its Member States collectively remained the world’s leading provider of Aid for Trade with a record EUR 10.7 billion. Project Lab 3 Eloise Todd, Brussels Director, ONE Negotiations over the next EU budget (2014-2020) will come to a head in November. With many EU Member States calling for cuts to the overall budget, there is a strong case for protecting EU aid spending. This interactive session will look at the findings of ONE’s DATA report 2012, exploring the results and added value of EU aid and looking at how protecting this can help Member States keep their individual aid promises. With the aid targets to Africa lagging most, how can the development community come together to prevent cuts to the European Development Fund and the EU aid budget?
