After 50 years of EU and international development efforts, positive impacts
on people’s livelihoods remain limited. Businesses and industries have a role
to play in creating smart, sustainable and inclusive growth in and with local
communities. Some leading entrepreneurs and stakeholders are experiencing
inclusive business models able to bring real improvements to the lives of the
most vulnerable. Focused assistance, as well as partnerships between
businesses, NGOs, local communities and public authorities are necessary for
a real contribution in the fight against poverty. One of the main challenges is
to identify how public donors and the European Union, together with the private
sector, can accelerate shared value creation at the base of the pyramid.
