TUESDAY 16 PROJECT LABS WORLD FOOD DAY | PROJECT LABS 14:30 – 15:30 Global Index Insurance Facility – GIIF Project Lab 1 Responding to the Impact of Food Security and Climate Change Viwanou Gnassounou, Expert in charge of Protocols and Commodities, ACP Secretariat Rose Goslinga, Coordinator Agricultural Insurance Initiative, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture Shadreck Mapfumo, Index-based Insurance Technical Expert, Global Index Insurance Facility Juerg Trueb, Managing Director and Head of Environment & Commodity Markets, Corporate Solutions, Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd The Global Index Insurance Facility, supported by the European Union, addresses the scarcity of affordable insurance protection against natural disasters in developing countries and aims at developing sustainable local markets for index-based insurance through innovative products. This session will demonstrate the importance of expanding access to insurance to farmers and pastoralists as a way of responding to challenges presented by climate change and food security. Examples from Africa and southern Asia will highlight the growing importance of offering simple, flexible and affordable index-based insurance products that cater to diverse clients’ needs. The session will also underscore the value of facilitating access to credit for purchasing inputs, leading to improved yields and farm incomes, which in turn contributes to greater food security. Geo-coding of aid activities at the sub-national level is a powerful way of answering questions of who is doing what and where. The Climate Change and African Political Stability (CCAPS) Dashboard tracks conflict and environmental conditions across Africa, plus all aid projects in Malawi, which demonstrates how the combination of open data and visualisation techniques can empower donors and beneficiaries with the tools and technologies necessary to provide accurate information on the performance and impact of projects.
