Training Programme<br />

<strong>Master</strong> <strong>Planning</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong><br />

Conservation Breeding<br />

• If appropriate housing is available all the animal houses should contribute into the<br />

planned breeding <strong>of</strong> the targetted species.<br />

• If the conservation breeding is intended for reintroduction in the wild, it should<br />

preferably be in <strong>of</strong>f-display.<br />

• Cooperative population management, coordination at regional and global level should<br />

also be part <strong>of</strong> the conservation breeding programme.<br />

Conservation Education<br />

• Conservation education is the most accepted objective <strong>of</strong> the zoos. <strong>Zoo</strong> Education,<br />

<strong>Master</strong> Plan should be a complete chapter in the <strong>Master</strong> Plan.<br />

• The <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Authority</strong> has involved Centre for Environmental Education (CEE)<br />

for developing a National <strong>Zoo</strong> Education <strong>Master</strong> Plan.<br />

Research<br />

• Research is very important, it should not come in the end, it should be a continuous<br />

process.<br />

• <strong>Planning</strong> for the research related activities in in-situ as well as ex-situ conditions<br />

should become a part <strong>of</strong> the master plan.<br />

• Creation <strong>of</strong> infrastructure including data storage, trained personnel and the issues<br />

to be dealt should be identified and become part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Master</strong> Plan.<br />

Visitors facilitation<br />

• Visitor facilities like ticket counters, souvenir shops, rest rooms, rain shelters, food<br />

courts, toilets/urinals and mode <strong>of</strong> transport are the components to be taken care <strong>of</strong><br />

while finalizing the master plan for the zoo.<br />

• Visitors circulation in the zoo should be well-defined.<br />

Human Resource Development<br />

• Having pr<strong>of</strong>essionally skilled manpower and regular upgradation <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> the establishment is another aspect which should also be considered.<br />

• The Regulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> Rules also prescribed some guidelines for the same it should<br />

be considered while planning for the zoos.<br />

Rescue & Rehabilitation<br />

• If appropriate housing is available, the zoo should continue to accept these animals,<br />

<strong>of</strong> course, after proper quarantine.<br />

• A separate area can also be earmarked for creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-display rescue facility.<br />

• Some <strong>of</strong> these rescued animals can be used as founders for conservation breeding<br />

programme.<br />
