Technical Session I Reading ID number 34 Tranquilized LTM for fixing transponder Planned breeding programme • There should be some purpose or objective for keeping each and every individual animal in a zoo. • Get the right founders of the targeted animal species. • Have and maintain the history cards, pedigree charts and stud books for each individual and targeted animal species. • For that each and every animal of the species must be identifiable by the keepers - by popular name; by the management using ear tags, rings or transponders. • The zoo library should have sufficient reference material on the targeted animal species. • Proper housing facilities, veterinary facilities including pathological laboratory facility should be available in the park. • Next important step is to select the proper breeding pairs, considering pedigree, compatibility, age structure, social behavior etc. Health precautions • Before mating – like deworming, vaccination. Health supplements etc., during pregnancy and after pregnancy are also required to be taken. • Facilities like nursery for hand rearing, trained manpower etc should be handy and if we properly succeed in-situ by improving the habitat and ex-situ by planned breeding – the two can meet.
