<strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>Zoo</strong>s</strong><br />

• Control <strong>of</strong> parasitic diseases: parasitic infestations cause considerable<br />

morbidity and mortality in zoo animals especially in young animals.<br />

• As it is impossible to eliminate parasitic infestation in zoo animals, attempts<br />

should always be made to keep the parasitic load below danger level.<br />

• A de-worming schedule is usually practised in most <strong>of</strong> the indian zoos.<br />

Health monitoring: zoo animals require keen day to day observations for<br />

health monitoring. After detection <strong>of</strong> illness, diagnosis <strong>of</strong> disease followed<br />

by suitable action by improving the management practices, appropriate<br />

therapeutic measures or both can be taken. Animal keepers / caretakers have<br />

to be trained for detection <strong>of</strong> illness, abnormal behaviour at the initial stage<br />

and on principles <strong>of</strong> preventive medicine and environmental sanitation.<br />

<strong>Zoo</strong> personnel health & hygiene: animal keepers are to be screened and<br />

their health status monitored periodically during employment for infectious<br />

diseases so that chances <strong>of</strong> infection from keeper to animal or vice versa<br />

could be avoided or minimised.<br />

<strong>Zoo</strong> veterinary hospital: should be properly equipped with facilities for<br />

disease diagnosis, handling, restraining and treatment <strong>of</strong> sick animals.<br />

<strong>Zoo</strong> Veterinary Hospital (ZVH) complex should have rooms for veterinarians<br />

and other supporting staff<br />

Diagnostic laboratory with required equipments and provisions<br />

Operation theatre with all equipments and provisions<br />

X-Ray room<br />

Indoor facilities for sick animals with squeeze cages <strong>of</strong> different sizes<br />

Medicine dispensing room<br />

Store room<br />

Rearing facilities for the mother rejected/orphaned zoo babies<br />

ZVH Complex should be located away from quarantine-isolation wards,<br />

postmortem room and carcass disposal complex in a suitable area <strong>of</strong> the zoo<br />

premises.<br />

Postmortem examination room and carcass disposal facilities<br />

Postmortem room with proper equipments and provision for conducting<br />

postmortem examination (PME) should be made available.<br />

For carcass disposal after PME –There should be a special grave yard or an<br />

incinerator for disposal <strong>of</strong> carcasses after PME to prevent the spread <strong>of</strong> infection.<br />
