MISSION<br />

“To achieve and promote the conservation <strong>of</strong> wild animals and their<br />

habitats.”<br />

Nandankanan pursues this mission by:<br />

• Keeping and presenting wild animals in accordance with suitable<br />

conservation practices<br />

• Taking up conservation breeding <strong>of</strong> different species <strong>of</strong> wild animals,<br />

particularly the endangered species belonging to the region<br />

• Rehabilitating/establishing endangered species <strong>of</strong> wild animals in their<br />

natural habitats whenever appropriate and desirable<br />

• Increasing public understanding <strong>of</strong> wild animals and their welfare and <strong>of</strong><br />

the issues involved in their conservation<br />

• Maintaining Education and Information Programmes for visitors,<br />

particularly for school children/younger generation<br />

• Undertaking Field Conservation Programmes<br />

• Providing a platform for Research and Scientific Study<br />

• Organising Training Programmes in management <strong>of</strong> wild animals, ex-situ<br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> species, <strong>Zoo</strong> design/planning etc.<br />

• Fulfilling it’s various roles through publications, scientific meetings/lectures,<br />

promotion <strong>of</strong> conservation policy/ planning etc.<br />

• Complementing and trengthening the national efforts in conservation <strong>of</strong><br />

rich biodiversity <strong>of</strong> the country, particularly the wild fauna<br />

• Rendering assistance in rescue, rehabilitation and treatment <strong>of</strong> wild animals<br />

at the time <strong>of</strong> need.<br />

As a result <strong>of</strong> various activities undertaken, Nandankanan has emerged as a vibrant<br />

centre for wildlife conservation.<br />

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND<br />

• Started with a few animals as small zoo in 1960 but planned to become major<br />

<strong>Zoo</strong>logical Park in the country. In the World Agriculture Fair organized in<br />

New Delhi in Jan – Feb. 1960 — animals collected from different parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

state. After the fair, animals kept at Khandagiri – water scarcity (main problem)<br />

– thought <strong>of</strong> relocating at convenient place.<br />

• The then Chief Minister, Dr. Hare Krushna Mahatab and Minister for<br />

Development Dr. Radha Nath Ratha alongwith senior forest <strong>of</strong>ficers located<br />

the present site along Kanjia lake in Jujhagarh and Krishna Nagar Demarcated<br />

Protected Forest.<br />
