from Brahman; original or natural form of anything. Prakriti is<br />
variously known as Maya, Ajnana, Pradhana, Avyaktha, Avidya,<br />
Tamas etc.<br />
Prana - the vital breath, which sustains life in a physical body. Also,<br />
the primal energy, or force, of which other physical forces are a<br />
manifestation. In the individual body Prana functions in five different<br />
ways and is given five different names: 1) Prana, the vital energy that<br />
controls breathing; 2) Apana, the vital energy that moves downward<br />
and out at the anus, and ejects unassimilated food, 3) Vyana – the vital<br />
energy that pervades the entire body; 4) Samana – the vital energy that<br />
carries nutrition to all parts of the body; 5) Udana – the vital energy by<br />
which the contents of the stomach are ejected through mouth and the<br />
soul is conducted from the body at the time of the death.<br />
Pranayama - control of the vital energy through the practice of<br />
breathing exercises. The fourth of the eight steps in raja yoga.<br />
Prasad - food or any other gift which has been offered to God or a holy<br />
person. It is usually distributed afterward to devotees.<br />
Prema - Love.<br />
Puranas - lit., "Ancient." Sacred books of the Hindus which popularize<br />
the worship of mainly either Shiva or Vishnu. There are eighteen major<br />
Puranas grouped in three divisions: 1) Rajas, exalting Brahma: Brahma<br />
Purana, Brahmananda P., Brahmavaivarta P., Markandeya P.,<br />
Bhavishya P., Vamana P., 2) Sattvika, exalting Vishnu: the Vishnu P.,<br />
Bhagvata P., Naradiya P., Garuda P., Padma P., Varaha P.; 3) Tamasa,<br />
exalting Shiva: the Shiva P., Linga P., Skanda P., Agni or Vayu P.,<br />
Matsya P., Kurma P. Puranas, while dealing with such topics as the<br />
creation of the world, the genealogy of gods and goddesses, and the<br />
dynasty of kings, also give stories of saints and devotees.<br />
Purusha - Spirit that dwells in the body.<br />
