extremely pious souls go there after death, live in communion with<br />

God, and attain final liberation, that is to say, oneness with Brahman at<br />

the end of the cycle; but those who go to Brahmaloka as a result of<br />

practicing life long Brahmacharya or the performance of one hundred<br />

Horse-sacrifices or other meritorious deeds come back to earth).<br />

Chandraloka: the plane or world of the Moon by the Southern Path,<br />

which is characterized by night, darkness, winter months. It is believed<br />

that the householders who perform their daily obligatory duties and<br />

religious rites with the view to enjoying their results, go after death, to<br />

Chandraloka and afterwards return to the earth. Chandraloka is also<br />

called Pitriloka.<br />

Devaloka: the world of Gods; any one of the three or seven or twenty -<br />

one higher worlds.<br />

Mahabharata - attributed to Sage Vyasa. The Mahabharata is the<br />

longest epic in the world. It describes the conflict and eventual war<br />

between the five sons of King Pandu and their cousins, the hundred<br />

sons of King Dhritarashtra, over the kingdom. Sri Krishna, who takes<br />

the side of the Pandavas, plays an important role in the drama. The<br />

eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita are part of this epic.<br />

Mantra - a sacred word, verse, or Vedic hymn. Also, the name of God<br />

which a guru gives to a disciple at time of initiation; A short prayer or<br />

spiritual formula.<br />

Maya - illusion, unreality; According it is Prakriti; according to<br />

Vedanta it is the source of visible creation; according to Shaivas it is<br />

one of the snares which entangle the soul; according to Vaishnavas it is<br />

one of the nine powers of Vishnu; it is a term of the Vedanta<br />

philosophy denoting ignorance which obscures the vision of Reality.<br />

Also, the cosmic illusion on account of which the one appears as many,<br />

the absolute as the relative. The word is also used to denote attachment.<br />

Other words interchangeably used for Maya are Avidya, Ajnana.<br />

Sometimes the extraordinary or supernatural powers are also referred to<br />

as maya.<br />
