Japam - repetition of a mantra, or name of God.<br />

Jivatma - a living or individual soul (as distinguished from Paramatma<br />

or Supreme soul).<br />

Jnana - Knowledge; according to Vedanta the knowledge of Brahman,<br />

derived through meditation on the Supreme Spirit; according to<br />

Samkhya knowledge about anything cognizance.<br />

Jnana Yoga - the path of knowledge.<br />

Jnani - a person illumined with knowledge of Reality; a follower of the<br />

path of Jnana.<br />

Karma - Action; an event, physical or mental, considered as both cause<br />

and effect; the sum of what one has done, said and thought; action<br />

which yields results to the doer, or which is the effect of his previous<br />

deeds. Also, the Sacrificial actions ordained by the scriptures. Action<br />

are of three kinds : Prarabdha karma - action performed in a previous<br />

life, begins to bear fruit at the beginning of the present life, which<br />

endures as long as the impetus given to it by the Prarabdha action<br />

lasts. Even an illumined person reaps, as long as he lives, the fruit of<br />

his Prarabdha karma though he remains undisturbed by it. Sanchitha<br />

Karma -an action performed in a previous life and remaining stored<br />

up, will bear fruit in a future life. Agami karma - action which is being<br />

performed in this life, will produce its result in a future life. According<br />

to Vedanta, the knowledge of Brahman, like a fire, reduces to ashes all<br />

the three kinds of action. Nishkama karma is a term used for work<br />

performed without any desire for result.<br />

Karma Yoga - the path of selfless work. One of the four main yoga, or<br />

paths to union with God.<br />

Kosha - The five sheaths that envelop the soul. They are onion peel<br />

like layers, the outer most sheath the anamaya kosha is the gross body<br />

the sharira itself. The next three layers form the subtle body and are<br />

respectively called pranamayakosha (relating to prana, the vital airs),<br />
