Bhagavan - an epithet of God signifying His six supernatural powers,<br />

namely, total majesty, righteousness, glory, affluence, knowledge and<br />

renunciation; an epithet of such divinities as Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna,<br />

Buddha and Sai; sometimes used a term of respect while addressing a<br />

holy man.<br />

Bhagavad Gita - lit., The "Song of God." One of the most important<br />

scriptures of the Vedanta philosophy, the Bhagavad Gita, or Gita for<br />

short, consists of the teachings of Sri Krishna to Arjuna on how to<br />

realize God while carrying on the duties of life. The eighteen chapters<br />

of this work are actually a part of the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.<br />

Bhagavatam – one of the more well known Puranas, devotional books<br />

of the Hindus. The Bhagavatam is especially popular among the<br />

Vaishnavas for its stories of devotees and life of Sri Krishna.<br />

Bhajans - Devotional songs.<br />

Bhakti - devotion to God, love of God especially in His personal<br />

aspect; a religious discipline emphasizing attachment to God, and also<br />

devotion, trust, homage, worship, piety, and faith; regarded by dualistic<br />

philosophers as the sole means of salvation.<br />

Bhakti Yoga - the path of devotion. One of the four main yoga or paths to<br />

union with God.<br />

Brahma - God as creator (not to be confused with Brahman, the<br />

transcendent Godhead of the Upanishads). Brahma is the First Cosmic<br />

person of the Hindu Trinity, the other two being Vishnu and Shiva.<br />

*Brahmacharya - continence, abstention from lust in thought, words,<br />

and deed. Also, the stage of life in which one lives as a celibate student<br />

devoted to spiritual practices and religious study.<br />

Brahman - the Absolute. The supreme reality of Advaita Vedanta. Also<br />

referred to as Nitya - the Absolute, the ultimate reality. Nirguna<br />

Brahman: devoid of qualifying characteristics; Brahman in its aspect<br />
