meditation deepens the entire phenomenal world disappears in Brahman<br />

and the aspirant becomes one with it. This stage of meditation is called<br />

Nirvikalpa."<br />

"In the subjective meditation the Ideal is placed within oneself.<br />

Vedantic seers speak of the heart as an extremely suitable place. As one<br />

progresses in meditation, one realizes that the heart denotes not the<br />

physical organ but the Buddhi (Intellect). At this stage the meditation is<br />

raised from the physical to the psychic level."<br />

Obstacles in Meditation: "The obstacles in our way are only two,<br />

though caused in various ways, namely dullness and distraction<br />

(aavarana and vikshepa). Whenever a person endeavors, without full<br />

training and right preparation, to be silent and listen to the movement of<br />

the higher states of being within himself, he either falls asleep (effect of<br />

dullness), or his mind is distracted and wanders. But if he can hold his<br />

consciousness in a tense state without either falling asleep or letting the<br />

mind wander, he will gradually but surely begin to be responsive to the<br />

subtlest throb, the most gentle whisper of the Self (Atman) within." By<br />

J.C. Chatterji in his book 'Wisdom of the Vedas'.<br />

A day or two before Shivaratri in her meditation Baba told her "All<br />

your impurities, all your conflicts, and all your samskars are taken care<br />

of before Shivaratri. You have been cleansed, corrected, and sanctified.<br />

After Shivaratri you will evolve, you will have the higher knowledge and<br />

wisdom. You will also understand the divine time concept". Almost two<br />

months later in the book 'Mind and Its Control' by Swami Budhananda,<br />

she read the following statement "The distractions in meditation are<br />

supposed to be caused by the forces of our subconscious mind, which are<br />

the storage house of samskars (past impressions and tendencies). Self<br />

examining our samskars and clearing them from our subconscious mind<br />

is what the right preparation for meditation."<br />

6. Sadguru (inner guru / inner teacher)<br />

No subject can be well learned without the help of a good teacher. It is<br />

said that same applies to the subject of spirituality. In the scriptures the<br />

importance of a guru is heavily emphasized. Early on, her friend M and<br />
