<strong>BCYF</strong> PROGRAM GUIDE <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong><br />

<strong>Boston</strong> Centers for Youth & Families (<strong>BCYF</strong>) is the City of <strong>Boston</strong>’s largest youth and human<br />

service agency offering programs and activities for people of all ages at 38 facilities in <strong>Boston</strong>.<br />

We are proud to introduce this first-ever <strong>BCYF</strong> <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> <strong>2010</strong>-<strong>2011</strong> containing dozens of<br />

neighborhood-based programs for <strong>Boston</strong>ians of all ages. Each month, <strong>BCYF</strong> offers over 400<br />

programs ranging from education to enrichment to a wide range of sports programs and leagues.<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> is committed to providing high-quality, outcome-driven programs that are responsive to<br />

neighborhood needs. To reach this goal, we have developed a comprehensive program<br />

framework known as ACES:Arts, Community & Civic engagement, Education, and Sports. Each<br />

of <strong>BCYF</strong>’s community centers offers a unique approach to ACES and opportunities vary from<br />

center to center. If you see something that interests you, we encourage you to contact the <strong>BCYF</strong><br />

community center directly for specific program, registration and fee information. For your<br />

convenience, a list of <strong>BCYF</strong> community centers and phone numbers are included on the previous<br />

page and a contact name is listed under most program listings contained in this brochure.<br />

We will make periodic updates to this brochure’s online edition, so check our website regularly at<br />

Baseball<br />

Fall Teen Baseball<br />

Locations: Ross Field and Iaconno Park, Hyde Park. September 16 through October 24th<br />

Sponsored and managed by JM Sports Academy, this is a great opportunity for passionate<br />

teenagers to continue to work on their baseball skills and fundamentals while competing against<br />

other youth. Quality baseball instruction will be provided in a fun and organized environment.<br />

Fenway Batting Cage <strong>Program</strong><br />

Location: Fenway Park February School Vacation Week, 10am-5pm, Tuesday - Friday<br />

A great opportunity for young players ages 6-8 from all around <strong>Boston</strong> to take batting practice at<br />

Fenway Park in the same cages as the pros. This program is sponsored by the <strong>Boston</strong> Red Sox.<br />

February Vacation Wiffle Ball Tournament<br />

Location: Various Community Centers TBD February 22nd-25th.<br />

This new program will take place at 3 community centers. Teams will battle for bragging rights in<br />

Basketball<br />

<strong>Boston</strong> Neighborhood Basketball League-13 & Under Girls<br />

Fall League<br />

Locations/Dates/Times: TBA<br />

The <strong>Boston</strong> Neighborhood Basketball League-13 & Under Girls Fall League is an instructional<br />

league aimed at teaching girls ages 10-13 the sport of organized basketball in a not-so<br />

competitive setting. While participants will be placed on teams and compete against each other,<br />

the primary focus of the games will be to provide instruction and practice for organized basketball.<br />

Fall Flag Football<br />

Locations: Community Centers TBD September 7th-November 26th, 4-7 pm<br />

A follow up to our successful spring leagues, we will support various community centers<br />

throughout the city in launching a fall flag football league which will run 1-2 afternoons per week<br />

depending on the site. Whether you are a rookie or a flag football veteran, this is sure to be a fun<br />

Girls Specific <strong>Program</strong><br />

All Girls Sports Festival<br />

The All Girls Sports Festival was created to enhance sports and fitness opportunities for girls.<br />

Our goal is to foster an atmosphere of freedom, exploration and individual challenge while helping<br />

participants to discover readily available resources for both in and out of school. Includes clinics,<br />

some skills contests to test knowledge and wellness workshops designed to enrich personal<br />

Golf<br />

Swing for <strong>Boston</strong> Classic<br />

Location: William Devine Golf Course, Franklin Park, Dorchester October 7, 7:30 am-3:00 pm<br />

The 2nd annual Swing for <strong>Boston</strong> Classic, to benefit the City of <strong>Boston</strong>’s Junior Golf <strong>Program</strong>, is<br />

hosted by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and is presented by the <strong>Boston</strong> Parks and Recreation<br />

Department in partnership with <strong>Boston</strong> Centers for Youth & Families. Join local sports celebrities<br />

and business executives in supporting <strong>Boston</strong>’s aspiring young golfers during this day filled with<br />

top-notch golf, a gala luncheon, an awards ceremony, and more. For tournament sponsorship<br />

Indoor Golf Lessons<br />

Location: Various Community Centers TBA February 28th-April 1st, 5:30-7:30 pm<br />

A six-week learn to play program for youth ages 7-17 and adults 18 and up. Learn the basics of<br />

the fundamentals and rules of golf in a group setting taught by highly qualified golf instructors.<br />

Sign-up is limited to a first come first serve basis. Equipment is provided. Youth lessons are free<br />

and the adult fee is $30 for all six weeks. Proceeds go directly to the Junior Golf Fund. Detailed<br />

Hockey<br />

Mayor’s Cup Youth Ice Hockey Tournament<br />

Locations: Various Rinks October 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 16th<br />

Sponsored by the <strong>Boston</strong> Bruins Foundation and Comcast, teams throughout <strong>Boston</strong> participate<br />

in this citywide tournament to vie for the championship title in nine divisions for boys and girls<br />

ages 6-14 (Mites, Squirts, Pee Wee, Girls U12, Girls U14, Girls U10.) Pre-registration of teams is<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> Floor Hockey <strong>Program</strong><br />

Locations: TBA November-February, Weeknights<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> Community Centers will develop teams of youth ages 8 - 14 for the first 2 weeks and then<br />

they will start to play other community centers around the City of <strong>Boston</strong>. The <strong>Boston</strong> Bruins are<br />

Rowing<br />

Mayor’s Cup Rowing Regatta<br />

Location: Harry Parker Boathouse, 20 Nonantum Road, Brighton Sunday, September 12th<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> and G-ROW <strong>Boston</strong>, Inc. have joined efforts to present this regatta and showcase the best<br />

of <strong>Boston</strong>’s youth rowing. Rowers ages 12-18 will compete in teams with other participants from<br />

their neighborhood in two different boat classes: 8’s and 4’s. The competition will be held on the<br />

Charles River from the docks of the Harry Parker (CRI) Boathouse in Brighton, where viewing will<br />

Rugby<br />

<strong>Boston</strong> Flag Rugby<br />

Locations/Dates/Times: TBA<br />

In partnership with Play Rugby USA, the <strong>Boston</strong> Flag Rugby <strong>Program</strong> will introduce youth ages<br />

10-18 to the game of rugby in a non-contact but extremely exciting setting. Youth will learn the<br />

basics of rugby and compete against each other. In addition, youth will learn life skills through<br />

the Play Rugby USA life skills curriculum. This program will run throughout the year at various<br />

community centers across the city. During the Spring, the program will move outdoors to local<br />

Skating<br />

Frog Pond Skating Party<br />

Location: <strong>Boston</strong> Common Frog Pond February 22 and 24, 10:00am-12:00pm Ages 6 - 18<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> Recreation will host 200 youth at a morning of frost and frills at the skating rink on <strong>Boston</strong><br />

Common. Seasoned skaters and new comers alike are welcome. Pre-registration is required.<br />

Soccer<br />

Fall Soccer Clinics<br />

Locations: Various Indoor/Outdoor TBD September 7th-November 26th<br />

<strong>BCYF</strong> is partnering with Soccer 1 and Mass. Premier Soccer to offer free soccer clinics<br />

throughout <strong>Boston</strong> neighborhoods. Kids of all skill levels will benefit from these instructional and<br />

<strong>2010</strong> Mayor’s Cup Soccer Tournament<br />

Location: Millennium Park, West Roxbury October 16th and 17th.<br />

Sponsored by Comcast, this great event brings together soccer players from leagues across the<br />

city to display their talent and sportsmanship. The tournament has 4 divisions which are 10 &<br />

under boys, 10 & under girls as well as 13 & under boys and 13 & under girls. Each division is<br />

formatted as a double elimination tournament with all teams being guaranteed at least two<br />

Coed Indoor Soccer leagues<br />

Location: Various Community Centers TBD January 10th -March 31st, <strong>2011</strong><br />

Once again partnering with Soccer 1 and Mass Premier Soccer we will offer this great winter<br />

program that brings players and coaches from youth soccer leagues around the city to our <strong>BCYF</strong><br />

centers. The league has 2 divisions, which are COED 7-9 and COED 10-12. Each team will play<br />

6-8 games and the division winners from each site will meet in a playoff on the final week of the<br />

Softball<br />

Girls Softball Clinics<br />

In partnership with the Bridgewater State College Softball Team and the <strong>Boston</strong> Red Sox RBI,<br />

softball clinics will be offered to inner city girls, ages 9 to 18. Instruction includes the fundamental<br />

Middle School Cross Country <strong>Program</strong><br />

Open to <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> middle school students at various participating schools, the goal<br />

of the program is to show that running can be a fun and cool team sport, while also developing<br />

the students’ discipline and endurance, so that they are able to run a mile by the end of the<br />

Indoor Track & Field Clinic<br />

Location: Northeastern University, Cabot Building February 23rd, 12:30-2:30pm<br />

Northeastern University “Huskies” Track Team will host a clinic for young people ages 6-14.<br />

Highlighting skill techniques of high jumping, hurdling, turbo javelin tossing and more, boys and<br />

girls will have an afternoon at the Cabot Physical Education Center hosted by Head Track Coach,<br />

Sherman Hart. Space is limited and individuals/groups need to pre-register. For more<br />

Wrestling<br />

<strong>Boston</strong> Neighborhood Wrestling Club-Winter <strong>Program</strong><br />

Location: Lilla G. Frederick Middle School, 270 Columbia Rd, November 30th-March 30th, 4:30-<br />

6:30pm. $25 fee.<br />

In partnership with the Lilla G. Frederick Middle School Wrestling Club, the <strong>Boston</strong> Neighborhood<br />

Wrestling Club Winter <strong>Program</strong> offers middle school youth up to age 15 an opportunity to learn<br />

wrestling and compete against other programs from surrounding areas. This program runs from<br />

November 30th through March and wrestling meets are on Saturdays and some Sundays<br />
