From Mark Griffin
It is hard to
believe how
quickly this
year has past,
and what a
year it has
been. Last
year at this
time we were
just settling
into our new
headquarters
in Las Vegas,
Mark Griffin
working with
the Riv to get the tournament set up and
staffing up for the event. We had a great
event last year but the 2006 BCA National
8-Ball Championships surpassed all our
expectations.
We are very pleased to announce
9ballpoker has affiliated with the BCA
Pool League in a sponsorship role.
9ballpoker will have a booth presence at
the 2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships and will launch live
9ballpoker in their booth. This should be
where all pool players play poker. Pool
players and poker players share the same
demographic comparison, so providing a
site rewarding the two was inevitable.
Pool players are in a win-win situation
with 9ballpoker because a portion of
every dollar they invest on
9ballpoker.com goes directly into prize
funds of BCAPL national and regional
events.
The 2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships is a completely new ball
game. A new tournament table is being
used in conjunction with the 2006
Championships, the 7-foot Diamond
Smart Table. Diamond Tables, used all
over the country at our state and regional
events, have become the official table of
the BCA Pool League (BCAPL). Our longterm
contract with Diamond and the new
west coast distribution center will enable
the continued growth and tournament
availability for the preferred table of the
BCAPL, Diamond Smart Tables.
Other new and exciting entities are
emerging as powerful players in the
Billiard industry. The IPT (International
Pool Tour) has burst onto the scene offering
upwards to $50 million in prize
money for tour participants. The IPT has
also contracted with Diamond Tables as
the official table of the International Pool
Tour. The IPT has requested all their
events be under the supervision of the
BCA Referee Program, the finest referee
program in the billiard industry,
administered by Bill Stock,
Rules & Referee Administrator
of the BCA Pool League. This
trusted tradition recently
officiated the IPT Orlando
event and received rave
reviews from Deno
Andrews-Tournament
Director of the IPT.
Congratulations go out to
Mark Avlon, Don Mokrauer, John
Leyman, Joe Destro, Genero Vasquez and
Marilyn Smith for representing the entire
BCA Referee Program with such dedication
and professionalism discharging
their duties at IPT Orlando.
More and more BCAPL events are slated
for the upcoming league year. We are proposing
events in Florida, Texas,
Minnesota and California to name a few.
We even have a new event within an
event-Cujoroho Challenge Series to be
held Tuesday, May 16 in the Royale
Pavilion Ballroom at the Riviera. This 512
player limited field will compete for
$20,000 to be awarded to the top 16 players
in a one day inaugural event to kick off
the Challenge Series. The Cujuroho
Cahllenge Series will produce weekly
events throughout the country and return
to the site of the 2007 BCA National 8-
Ball Championships where they will give
away a cool $1,000,000.00 to a single
player. Exciting to say the least!
We have set in motion a new League
Player Challenge held in conjunction with
Dragon Promotions and the UPA. The
first event, League Player Challenge 1, will
What a Year for Pool and the
BCA Pool League
be held June 3-4, 2006 in conjunction
with Dragon Promotions East Coast
Amateur Championships in New
Brunswick, New Jersey. This Challenge
Series rewards our league players who
support the BCA Pool League week in and
week out throughout the league system.
These events allow only sanctioned league
players and can be entered through the
BCA Pool League’s national office
and participating League
Operators.
The BCAPL evaluated the prize
fund for the previous 8-Ball
Championships and determined
some of the divisions
we under-funded or
received no funding at
all. Beginning 2006, all
divisions are funded
and new prize money
allocations are instituted
based on division participation. All open
divisions, representing our core league
player, will now share in the distribution
of funds and receive their fair share. We
have also separated the Open Division by
establishing a new Player Member
Division, which requires League Players
to compete against other League Players
and Player Members to compete against
Player Members.
The BCAPL is on track to give away over
$250,000 for the 2006/2007 league year.
Our League Operator and player base
growth over the last year tells us we are on
the right track to continued success.
The BCAPL has added a record $92,500
to the 2006 Championships, an increase
of over $40,000 in one year. In addition,
we contracted with Joss Cues to produce
100 commemorative cues valued at $250
each, a $25,000 value, to be given away at
the Championships. It is simple, if you are
entered in the Championships, you are
entered in the drawing to win one the cues
and you need not be present to win. We
thank Joss Cues for supporting the
BCAPL.

“Dr. Cue” photo.
The Artistic Pool challenge shot diagrams
are available online at the BCA Pool
League website, www.playbca.com. The
shots include five “Degree of
Difficulty” (DOD) rated shots, in
which each player receives one practice
attempt and three attempts to
score. A score on the practice attempt
counts as a “perfect” score and used in
tie-breaking situations. A “bank” challenge
and a “speed control” challenge
complete the program. The top eight
men and the top four women will
advance to the finals on Saturday, and
all players will start over with zero
points in the race to a division victory.
This annual event is part of a movement
to bring the high spirited art
form called Artistic Pool to more amateur
players. A corresponding BCA
Junior Artistic Pool program is in its
14th year.
Professional formats with eight skill
disciplines grace the highest challenge
levels for many cue artists worldwide
under the WPA umbrella and continental
federation structures, creating
open qualifiers and the WPA World
The Artistic Way!
Roaming
Photographer
set for National
Championships
Rick Schmitz, of Oro Valley,
Arizona, will introduce innovations
in Photo-Art technology to
the 2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships. Those of you who
attended the 2005 BCA National
9-Ball Championships saw this
process unfold using regular photographs.
Scott Frost, winner of
the 2005 U S Open One Pocket
Championship has this technology
depicted on the trophy presented
to him.
This process is now available to all
participants and visitors to the
2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships. Please visit Rick’s
Images located in the hallway
between the Grande Ballroom and
the Royale Pavilion at the Riviera
Hotel & Casino. You will be
amazed and impressed with the
process.
Rick found a way about 5 years ago
to merge his two passions, photography
and pool, by perfecting this
Pool-Art process. Rick studied
Photoshop under Dennis McSorley
in New York where he first learned
of this technology.
Rick said, “Few times in life do we
have the opportunity to converse
with a true legend. I spoke to a
man many years ago at the
Hermitage Hotel in Nashville,
Tennessee who suggested I combine
my two passions and I thank
him to this day for his encouragement.”
That man was Rudolph
Wanderone, the legendary
Minnesota Fats!
Rick will be roaming the ballrooms
at the Riv providing his services to
all. Whether it’s a team photo, singles
or even just you and your
honey, Rick will provide you with a
truly awesome memento from the
2006 Championships.

Speed Pool
Ready, Set, Break!
Take the Speed Pool Challenge
Be sure to test yourself against the fastest
players in the world at the BCA Pool
League Speed Pool Challenge during the
BCA National 8-Ball Championships. The
competition, always fast and furious, is
open to any amateur competitor in the
2006 BCA Nationals.
There are separate events: Speed Pool
Challenge I (May 12-16), and Speed Pool
Challenge II (May 17-20). Each challenge
consists of a Men’s and a Women’s division.
$200 will be added to the final payout
of each Men’s division and $50 will be
added to the final payout of each
Women’s division. Competition runs
from Noon to 6pm daily, with the finals
for Speed Pool I at 3 pm May 16 and for
Speed Pool II at 3 pm May 20. The $10
entry fee includes three attempts at running
all 15 object balls. All entry money
goes toward the prize funds. Prizes are
awarded daily for top Men’s and
Women’s division scores. The top eight
Men’s and top four Women’s division
scores will play off in a race to 3 match
single-elimination finals on May 16 and
May 20. The draw of each final is based
on the #1 score for the week vs. #8, #2 vs.
#7, etc. The goal is to pocket all 15 object
balls, in any order, in the fastest time. The
8-ball is required to be the last ball pocketed.
Please note: the top four men and the top two
women in the May 12-16 competition will not
be allowed to compete again in the May 17-20
competition.
Speed Pool Challenge Guidelines
BCAPL tournament Dress Code will be
enforced at all times. No exceptions! Play
begins with the 15 numbered balls racked
according to BCA 8-Ball rules, and the
cue ball behind the head string as in a
normal round of 8-Ball. The clock starts
when the cue ball is struck on the opening
break.
No “safe” breaks. Breaker must either 1)
pocket a ball or 2) drive at least four numbered
balls to a rail. If this requirement is
not met, a 5 second penalty is imposed. If
the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, it is a
re-rack, whether the cue ball scratches or
not, with no penalty. If a player scratches
on the break, a 5 second penalty is
imposed, and the player places the cue
ball behind the head string and may shoot
in any direction. A player may only strike
the cue ball when it is stationary, but the
object balls can still be in motion when
initiating a shot. (The player may strike
the cue ball if it has come to a stop but is
still spinning on its spot.)
The 8-ball is not neutral. A player can
only contact the 8-ball first when it is the
last ball on the table. If contacting the 8ball
first when it is not the last object ball,
a 10 second penalty is imposed. If a player
scratches in the middle of the game, or
fails to make contact with an object ball
on a shot (does not have to drive a ball to
the rail), a 10 second penalty is imposed.
Have fun, good luck
and shoot fast!

30th BCA National 8-Ball Championships
2005 BCA National 9-Ball Championships
The 2005 BCA National 9-Ball
Championships were a huge success.
The event was contested in downtown
Las Vegas and featured Men’s and
Women’s Team and Singles 9-Ball
events as well as Scotch Doubles. Also
featured this year was a men’s 10-Ball
competition and Open 10-Ball Ring
Game event. These events were played
on the 7’ Diamond Smart Table that uses
a set of Super Aramith Pro balls, the Red
Circle cue ball and Simonis 860 Tour
Blue Cloth.
In addition to the 9-Ball Championships,
the US Open One Pocket event and a
Banks Tournament provided a super
competitive blend of amateur and professional
players alike displaying incredible
shot making talent. The One Pocket
and Banks Tournament were contested
on 9’ Diamond ProAm tables. In attendance
at this event were such names as
2004 US Open Champion Gabe Owen,
Shannon Daulton, Ronnie Allen and Ron
Wiseman, just to name a few.
The BCA National 9-Ball Championships
experienced a 52% growth over 2004
and a 73% growth in entrants into
events. In other words, we expanded our
field to 541 individual players who posted
822 entries making multiple event
players the rule and not the exception at
the 2005 Championships. We strive to
incorporate different events so that all
players have a choice to play in as many
events as they wish, creating real value
Lance Salazar
for the time any money they invest in
order to participate in the
Championships.
Men’s 9-Ball Singles
The Men’s 9-Ball world has a new set of
heroes. This event featured a handicap
system allowing Master level players to
compete against those in the Open class.
Lance Salazar of Cotati, California bested
the field by beating Stan Tourangeau
of Vancouver, BC. Pulling up in third
was another Californian, Deo Mark
Alpajora of San Leandro.
Women’s 9-Ball Singles
Samm Diep of Denver is our new Ladies
Nine Ball Queen, an honor she took by
relegating Connie Williams of Tulsa to
second place. Julie Perkins traveled
from Oklahoma City to take the third
place slot.
Men’s 9-Ball Team
The Men’s Nine Ball team event wound
up with a showdown between The
Corporation from Stacy’s Sports Bar in
San Antonio, Texas and Hit ‘N Run from
Bakersfield, California. The Corporation,
made up of Captain Manny Guerra, Co-
Captain Rick Largue, Destry Ensley and
James ‘Bastrop’ Davis, would have to
double-dip Hit ‘N Run as they had come
undefeated through the field of 64 teams.
Hit ‘N Run, comprised of Captain Terry
Lilly, David Turner, Frank Shirey, Brian
Parks and Sam LaCava, had no intention
of allowing any such thing. The match
stayed incredibly tight and as they neared
the end of their race to thirteen games,
Hit ‘N Run held an 11-10 lead. With no
room to relax, every player began to slow
their pace and do whatever they could
manage to avoid giving away any daylight
to their foes.
The format of the match was designed to
eliminate any luck factor coming into
play. When these two teams played to a
12-12 tie the match was sent into a threegame
tie breaker. The two captains had to
choose their three best players to send out
for these crucial games. Hit ‘N Run went
with David Turner, Frank Shirey and
Brian Parks. The Corporation sent Manny
Guerra, Rick Largue and James Davis
into the fray.
First to face off were Rick Largue vs.
David Shirey and Manny Guera vs. Brian
Parks. Guerra finished his set early with a
two-nine combination. While Largue and
Shirey continued their game James Davis
and David Turner began theirs. Largue
polished off his rack to send us into the
second set before Davis and Turner could
damage their rack. With these two teams
so evenly matched, it was no surprise that
our final set would be razor close. The two
teams tied the score first at six games
apiece, then at seven games each and
again at ten. The title became a tense race
to three. The Corporation got to the hill
first and needed only to win one game
while Hit ‘N Run stalled. Then Frank
Shirey made the nine on the snap to bring
Hit ‘N Run within one game at 12-11.
Manny Guerra of The Corporation had
the opportunity to end the drama. And he
did. When he pocketed the final nine The
Corporation of San Antonio became our
new 2005 National 9-Ball Championship
team.
Women’s 9-Ball Team
The Women’s BCA National 9-Ball
Team Champions for 2005 are the
Missing Chinks of Las Vegas. Captain
Julie Nogiec led teammates Jane
Fujinaga and Katie Moore to a two-set
victory over the Happy Bunnies of Los
Angeles, California. The Happy bunnies
Melinda Huang) played a strong first set
and won that to force the deciding set
which the Missing Chinks claimed with
deadly shot-making.
Scotch Doubles
The Scotch Doubles event was captured
by the duo of Glenn Atwell and Elizabeth
Cole from Vancouver. Runner-up honors
went to Chisolm Woodson and Samm
Diep of Denver while Justin Whitehead of
Arizona and Connie Williams of Tulsa
claimed third place on the podium.
10-Ball Singles
The 2005 BCA Pool League National 9-
Ball Championships inaugurated three
more champions. In the 10-Ball Singles
event Dave Datillo shot down Danny
Medina in a single set after Medina had
topped Shannon Daulton in a double-hill
thriller to gain his berth in the finals.
Medina never got to his top gear as Datillo
dominated the table with his methodic
and precise play.
10-Ball Ring Game
Elizabeth Cole
Azmi Nabhan of Rock Ledge, Florida
took out Ken Greer of Austin Texas in
the 10-Ball Ring game competition
while a familiar name, Ronnie Allen of
Chico, California, was forced to settle for
third. This event is a newly designed format
taking the ring game concept and
dropping it into a tournament format.
Charts and rules were established from
scratch and the event was a tremendous
success.
U.S.Open One-Pocket
The US Open One
Pocket Championship
was captured by Scott
Frost with an unflinching
display of shooting
power and courage. In
his championship
match against One
Pocket powerhouse
Gabe Owen, Scott never
gave Owen any air at all.
Frost won the lag, broke
the corner ball in on his
break, and then proceeded
to clear the table
for the initial lead.
Owen had his best
showing in the next
rack when he also ran
eight straight balls after
coming out ahead in the
opening strategy lab of
safeties that is the hallmark
of the game.
Again, Frost broke in
the corner ball in the
third game and followed
that with a run of
six that left Owen too far behind to
regain his balance.
From there on it was the Scott Frost
show. He kept Owen contained without
opportunities and struck home on even
the most difficult shots to gain control of
the table and keep it. He broke in the
corner ball in each of his three breaks
(alternating breaks). In the last rack,
Frost faced a situation in which he had
no good choices. The cue ball was in the
center of the table near the head string
and there was a series of small clusters
down table, none of which offered great
possibilities. After surveying the table
for several minutes, he sent the cue ball
into the farthest cluster. The balls came
apart and the three-ball drifted towards
Owens pocket. The cue ball came off the
side rail and nestled up right beside the
three on the foot rail, offering Owen
nothing but a safety. Three intentional
fouls later Frost found an opening and
made a ball. He then made a tough longrail
bank and needed the final ball for
the win. It lay on the head rail near the
corner pocket on the side of the table
opposite his pocket. Putting a tremendous
amount of left English on the cue
to throw the object ball off the rail, the
ball maintained just enough speed to
rebound the length of the table and into
his hole for the dramatic win.
Owen knew he had been bested. “Scott
really played well. There was nothing I
could do to stop him,” he told us. Frost
has matured now as a player, no longer
the hot and cold boisterous kid that first
came upon the pro scene less than ten
years ago. His demeanor and his game
are now cool and thoughtful, and his
opponents can no longer count on him
to defeat himself with overly aggressive
play.
Getting to the finals was a struggle.
Many of the matches were lengthy and
exhausting. Ike Runnels and James
Walden ran over five hours in their battle
and there were several other matches
that exceeded four hours in length.
What a grand event for all to witness.
Bank Tournament
The Bank Pool division had seen
Shannon Daulton grab the hot seat and
Brandon Shuff had to best Mike Pankoff
to face ‘the Cannon’ in the final round.
After taking down Pankoff 4-1 in a quick
match, Shuff called out: “The Cannon’s
getting ready to be shot down!” Daulton
only grinned and came out to let his
stick do all his talking. Taking a sure 3-
0 lead in their race, Daulton showed
that he is the master of the cushions,
sending balls dead into the heart of the
pockets off of any number of rails that
he pleased.
Two racks later Daulton had captured
the top prize 5-0 and had shown the
crowd just who the class of the banks
field was this week. In truth, no one had
shown anything close to the strength
that Daulton, player representative for
SouthEast Cues, had brought to bear
upon his opponents.
What a week of pool!

A Carom Table? … Let the Tradition begin!
The 2005 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships began what will become
a Tradition for our 3-Cushion family.
The BCA Pool League is proud to
announce the 2006 Championships will
once again support the fine art of
Billiards. Join in as many other carom
enthusiasts crowd around the billiard
table located just inside the main
entrance to the Royale Pavilion ballroom
(the back ballroom) to participate
in this fun venue.
Again this year, Paul Frankel – Professor
Q Ball, will once again sponsor a booth
featuring USBA Champion Mazin
Shooni, who recently won the USBA
Nationals in Miami, performing his talents
on a Gabriels Billiards table illuminated
by Diamond Professional lighting.
Gabriels Billiards tables are among the
finest in the business and the quality of
Diamond Professional lighting is well
known.
Tournament-goers will be able to challenge
Mazin in a race to three points for
a $5 entry fee. Those who can beat him
will win a cue and case. Players will use
cues provided by our sponsors. Last
year, over 280 entered the contest, and
a lucky 37 took home a cue and case. As
an added attraction this year, Mazin will
offer special clinics during the sevenday
promotion.
The BCA Pool League would like to
extend a special Thank You! to several
people for making this billiard experience
happen. Gabriels Billiards tables and
Diamond Billiard Products deserve our
thanks for providing such great equipment.
It is no easy task to deliver and set
up this equipment. And to Professor Q-
Ball, Paul Frankel, for coordinating such
a fine promotion. Our thanks go out to a
loyal BCAPL supporter, Dr. Cue (Tom
Rossman), a true billiard fanatic. Tom
displays his talents
through his great
Artistic Pool exhibitions
and competitions
at the
Nationals. Tom is
an accomplished
carom player, and
he will bring his
talent, enthusiasm
and entertainment
to the billiard table
as well.
You might be asking
yourself what a
billiard table is
doing at an 8-Ball
event. The BCAPL
does not view the
billiard industry as
divided into competing
sectors. A
rising tide lifts all
boats, and it is our
goal to foster a
growth environment
for all billiard
sports.
Take this as my
personal invitation to drop by the booth,
bring your cue and participate in the fine
art of Billiards.
BCA Pool League Referee Program
A Trusted Tradition
The BCA Pool League Referee
Program is indeed a trusted tradition
and remains the benchmark for referee
programs throughout the world.
Its reputation precedes itself and
never more evident than in recent
months. The newly formed
International Pool Tour (IPT) held
their inaugural event in Florida and
found themselves in need of a professional
group of referees to administer
this high-profile event.
Six of the finest referees in the world
were called upon to insure a consistent,
well-officiated contest. Of course,
the six were all BCA Pool League distinguished
referees, all National
Senior Referee or National Referee
status. They were Mark Avlon,
Marilyn Smith, Don Mokrauer, John
Leyman, Joe Destro and Genaro
Vasquez. All were praised for their
professionalism and manner in which
they represented the BCA Pool
efforts. You made us proud!
Speaking of pride, it is our pleasure
to announce that Don Mokrauer
has been named “Referee of the
Year” by the BCA Pool League
Administrator Bill Stock. Bill said,
“Don has exceeded all expectations
and has handled himself and a multitude
of situations with professionalism
and dignity. We are elated to
award this distinction to such an
accomplished referee.” Don has
been committed and involved in
the referee program since January
2001. Congratulations Don!
Scotch Doubles Rules
Same as BCA 8-Ball rules with the
exception of:
(1). Flip for first break.
(2). Alternating team breaks.
(3). Race to four; losers’ bracket is race
(4). Alternate each shot.
(5). No time-out will be allowed. Any of
the four players may call a foul. Any
other coaching (verbal or otherwise)
(6). Either player on a team may break
whenever the team’s turn arises.
(7). If a team switches its rotation during
a game, it is a foul, and the following
procedure applies: If the
shooting team has shot out of order,
the opposing team receives cue ball
in hand anywhere on the table. If
the foul is not noticed until the second
foul may not be charged, and the
new sequence must continue until
the conclusion of the game.
Important Tournament Rules
All players are responsible for knowing
the rules. Here is a refresher course on
some of the rules and judgment calls
that the BCAPL Referees will administer
at the 2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships. Except when clearly
contradicted by these additional rules,
the General Rules of Pocket Billiards
and the 8-Ball World Standardized
Rules apply, as found in Billiards:
The Official Rules & Records Book
published by the Billiard Congress of
America.
General Play
1. Open table (8-Ball) – When the
table is open, it is a FOUL to contact
the 8-ball first. The incoming player
will receive cue ball in hand and the
table will still be open.
2. Practice – a player may not practice
on the match table or nearby table during
the match in Singles or Scotch
Doubles play. If your opponent calls
your practicing to the attention of a
BCAPL Referee, you will be adjudged to
have FOULED. In team play, a team
member may practice on an adjoining
or nearby table as long as they are not
playing a game at the same time. Any
team player practicing at the same time
they are playing a game will be
adjudged to have FOULED if brought
to the attention of the BCAPL Referee.
3. Concession – If a player attempts to
unscrew his/her jointed cue stick while
the opponent is at the table and during
the opponent’s decisive game of a
match, it will be considered a concession
of the match. No warning is
required.
4. Opening break – On the opening
break, the game is considered to have
commenced once the cue ball has been
struck by the cue tip and the shooter
has assumed the shooting position.
5. Measuring device – the cue stick
may be used as an aid to judge gaps, or
as an aid to a shot, as long as the cue is
held by the hand. To do otherwise is a
FOUL and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Scenarios: 1) If a player releases the cue
stick onto the table and walks around
the table to view the cue stick in lining
up a shot, it is a FOUL. 2) If a player
releases the cue stick onto the table and
bends over to tie his/her shoelaces, it is
a foul.
6. Out of head string warning – When
a player has the cue ball in hand behind
the head string, the opponent/referee
shall warn him before he shoots if he
has placed the cue ball on or within????ball
width outside of the head
string. If the player then shoots from on
or within the specified distance outside
the head string, the stroke is a FOUL. If
the shooter places the cue ball outside of
the head string beyond the specified
limit, no warning is required and the
stroke is a FOUL.
Scotch Doubles
1. Open Scotch Doubles teams consist of
one male and one female player, both of
whom are eligible to play in the Open
Singles division. Master Scotch Doubles
teams consist of one male and one
female player, either or both of whom
would be eligible to compete only in the
Master Singles division. A player may
compete on only one Scotch Doubles
team.
2. Both members of any Scotch Doubles
team must come from within the same
BCA Pool League Operator’s system.
3. Determine home team by a flip of the
coin.
4. Players on a team alternate each shot.
The teams alternate
breaks. Either team
member may break.
5. Teams may change
shooting rotation after
any game. Failure to
stay in rotation once
the game has started
will result in a FOUL.
The original rotation
must be restored on
their next turn. Note: It
is permissible to
inquire as to whose
shot it is at anytime
without fear of a
coaching foul. Any further
discussion when
the team is deemed to
be “At the Table”
will result in a FOUL.
6. When a team is not
www.playbca.com • ‘As Solid As It Gets!’ 29
“At the Table” they may quietly discuss
anything they please … or not. No
timeouts or coaching allowed. Any
assistance (verbal or non-verbal) by a
team during their turn at the table is a
FOUL.
7. When the table is turned over to the
incoming team, one of the partners
must IMMEDIATELY approach the
table.
8. When the 8-ball is legally pocketed on
the break, the breaker’s incoming partner
makes the decision, without discussion,
whether the 8-ball will be spotted
or the game will be re-racked.
9. If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break
and a FOUL occurs, the opposition
shall select the player to decide between
spotting the 8-ball and re-racking.
10. Any of the four players involved with
the match can call a FOUL.
11. All other rules pertaining to 8-Ball that
can be found in Billiards: The
Official Rules & Records Book will
apply.
Teams
1. A player can compete on only one team
at the BCA National 8-Ball
Championships.
2. Substitutions: The Team Captain
may substitute any player in lineup for
any other player on the
roster prior to the start
of each round only.
The opposing Team
Captain must be notified
of a change in the
lineup. All players
must stay in their same
numbered position in
each successive round
unless they sit out one
round. A regular or
substitute player may
not play the same
opponent twice.
Should this occur, it
will be a forfeit of that
particular game only
by the team causing
the double play to
occur. Once a round
has begun, no lineup
changes may be made.

$200,000 added to
BCA Pool League events!
Mark Griffin pledged he would double the added
money for the 2005/2006 league year from $100,000
to a resounding $200,000, which includes $32,000
more for the 2006 BCA National 8-Ball
Championships.
Over $92,000 has been committed so far:
$92,250 BCA National 8-Ball Championships (an
increase of $32,000)
New in 2006
Player Member
Division
Two membership classifications are available
within the BCAPL, League Member
and Player Member. A Player Member does
not need to play in a local BCA Pool League
and purchases a $25 yearly membership
that allows the member to participate in
singles competition at the Regional &
National Championships. Although this
policy broadens our membership base, it
also detracts from our ability to maintain
level playing fields for all when player members
participate in Open Division events.
Therefore, a new Player Member Division is
born. Men and Women’s Player Member
Divisions will become part of the BCA
National 8-Ball Championships in May
2006. Player Members are eligible to play in
Player Member Divisions only at national
events. This new division will have an added
fund of $10,000 to be shared proportionately
between the Men and Women’s
Divisions.
Grand Masters Division
The Grand Master Divisions were the buzz of the 2005
Championships. The event was so well received that we have
expanded the 2006 Men’s field to 64 and the Women’s field to
32. The Divisions will split $10,000 added money based on participation.
The Grand Masters Division is the only event that may
be entered onsite provide the fields are not full. If eliminated
from your event, and want to step up against the “Grandest”
players in the world, the Grand Masters is for you. This event
bridges the gap between amateurs and pros – any player that is
not playing in the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championships (the pro
event) is eligible to play as a Grand Master at the 8-Ball
Championships.
Finally, pool players of ALL abilities have an opportunity
to compete at the Riviera during the BCA National 8-
Ball Championships.
In the past, aspiring players would advance from Open to
Master, and Master to Pro. The Master list evolved into a broad
spectrum of abilities, from “barely a Master” to “super Masters.”
Over time, the Master divisions became dominated by Super
Masters, and the pro lists became populated by a growing number
of players that are barred from amateur competition, but
have a difficult time winning in pro events. Many players on the
pro/semi pro lists feel that they have nowhere to play. The new
Grand Master division allows the League to advance a top
Master, without sending the player off to the pro ranks never to
be seen again, and rewards the average Master with a better
chance of winning in their Master Division.
30th BCA National 8-Ball Championships
The Greatest Pool
Tournament
in the World!
Year after year the BCA National 8-Ball
Championships is touted as the “Greatest
Pool Tournament in the World” and
for good reasons. The BCA National 8-Ball
Championships title is the oldest national
amateur title for a continuing national pool
league. The first championships were contested
in 1977 at the Dayton Convention
Center in Dayton, Ohio. Over time, the
tournament’s growth has required larger
and lager venues. The current venue, the
Riviera Hotel & Casino, hosts the event
using over 100,000 feet of ballroom and
meeting space and fills 1,600 of their 2,000
rooms with tournament players and spectators.
The event is widely recognized as the place
to be in the month of May in the billiard
industry. No other function or show in our
industry brings together amateur players,
professional players, League Operators,
referee organizations, exhibitors and spectators
all in one space to share the experience
that becomes the World’s Greatest
Pool Tournament.
In recent years, the Greatest Pool
Tournament in the World! has added
the Masters, Seniors, Trophy, and Grand
Masters divisions, as well as the Artistic
Pool Championships, Speed Pool
Challenge, and a Second-Chance Team
Tournament. New for the 2006 8-Ball
Championships is the Player Member
Divisions. These divisions separate the
league player from the player member who
is required only to purchase a player membership
and did not participate in league
play. Separating the two entities levels the
playing field and provides a more competitive
tournament experience.
We now have eleven Singles, six Team, and
two Scotch Doubles divisions. Combined
with the three special events, makes a
grand total of twenty-five distinct tournaments
to contest over nine days of tournament
play. Over $700,000 will be awarded
at the 2006 Championships.
Thanks to you, the BCA National 8-Ball
Championships remains “The Greatest
Pool Tournament in the World” – and
a major part of the BCA Pool League heritage.
Please join us again next year at the
Riviera Hotel & Casino – May 11-19, 2007.
Thanks for coming …
and see you next year!
