Ranaweera 2 The research site, situated in the municipality of Pangil, province of Laguna, was part of a network of sites where technology verification trials and Barangay Pilot Production Programs (BPPP) were implemented. This cropping systems work was undertaken by the Regional Integrated Agricultural Research Systems (RIARS) of the Department of Agriculture (DA). The Pangil site represented rice-based cropping s!.stems under r:linfed conditions in Laguna. The RIARS activities in Pangil started in 1983 and addressed the rice-based and coconut-based farming systems in the area. Initial activities were conducted in barangays (villages) Isla and Balian where there were three rice-based environments: rainfed, irrigated, and seasonally inundated areas. The rainfed areas are located in Isla and a part of Balian; whereas, the irrigated and seasonally inundated areas were confined to Balian. A rice - watermelon cropping system (RWCS) \\,as tested in the rainfed areas, a rice - rice cropping pattern in the irrigated areas, and a deepwater rice - rice cropping pattern in the seasonally inundated areas. Cropping systems trials on coconut + citrus followed in 1981. The RWCS was not very successful in Isla for 2 yr (1953-85) presumably because of heavy rainfall during the critical stages of \\.atermelon cultivation, especially during the fruiting stage. Six cooperators were selected for the initial cropping systems study. Results showed a favorable performance of the RCWS during the trial period (1986-85). In 1989, BPPP was launched to involve 28 farmers on an aggregate area of 29 ha. SITE DESCRIPTION Dambo is a village in the eastern region of Pangil, Laguna. The village is about 1.1 km from the town and is accessible by a provincial road. Dambo consisted of 198 households and had a total population of 1,015 in 1989.
