residential hotels, more current needs can be met at the same time that a more inclusive<br />

history is told in <strong>historic</strong> districts.<br />

The study of history has changed dramatically since James Marston Fitch<br />

described <strong>historic</strong> preservation as simply the curatorial management of the built world,<br />

based on resistance to change and drawing protective boundaries around selected <strong>historic</strong><br />

places. As the urban planning profession reintegrates the city in new ways, <strong>historic</strong><br />

preservation can teach the untold lessons of urban history. Instead of focusing on the<br />

typology of architecture and monumentalism, preservationists show how Americans used<br />

to build cities, revisiting old ideas and potentially avoiding the errors of the past. Urban<br />

planners have much to learn from urban historians. Historic preservation professionals<br />

can provide an interdisciplinary bridge between these fields of knowledge.<br />
