existing city <strong>historic</strong> preservation district, so the project included review of previous<br />
context statements and assessment <strong>for</strong>ms.<br />
In February 2009, this writer obtained full-time employment as a historian by the<br />
Cali<strong>for</strong>nia Office of Historic Preservation’s Registration Unit. This job became the final<br />
semester of internship. As the unit responsible <strong>for</strong> reviewing and preparing National<br />
Register <strong>nomination</strong>s <strong>for</strong> review by the State Historical Resources Commission and<br />
subsequent submission to the Keeper of the National Register, the Registration Unit was<br />
the ideal place to learn how to generate National Register <strong>nomination</strong>s. Although the<br />
Registration Unit does not normally generate its own <strong>nomination</strong>s, the Boulevard Park<br />
district became an experiment in office-generated <strong>nomination</strong>s.<br />
Photographic surveys of the district in the winter of 2009 captured images of<br />
buildings be<strong>for</strong>e spring foliage obscured many of the houses. These surveys included all<br />
buildings and contributing features in the district. A National Register district <strong>nomination</strong><br />
does not require photographs of each property, but complete photos of all buildings<br />
allowed easier architectural description and assessment of integrity <strong>for</strong> each property.<br />
Photographs of significant contributors, common property types, and landscape setting<br />
are provided with the <strong>nomination</strong> (see Appendix A.) During these surveys, the basic<br />
architectural details of each building were recorded <strong>for</strong> later use in architectural<br />
description.<br />
During the spring and summer of 2009, processing and reviewing National<br />
Register <strong>nomination</strong>s on the job provided significant insight into their process and<br />
