Five Quarto editions <strong>of</strong> the Shep Cal<br />

appeared in the poet's lifetime—m 1579,<br />

1581, 1586, 1591, and 1597 <strong>The</strong>y are<br />

An exhaustive collation <strong>of</strong> these editions<br />

proves conclusively that though some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

corrections may have been made at Spenser's<br />

instigation, he cannot be regarded as in any<br />

way responsible for the general form <strong>of</strong> the<br />

text after Q 1 Each Q was printed from its<br />

predecessor, and the first Folio, 1611 (F),<br />

from Q 5 Each edition corrects a few errors,<br />

reproduces many, and initiates others <strong>The</strong><br />

present text, therefore, is printed from Q z,<br />

and the following notes record departures<br />

from Q z, adding a few characteristic read<br />

ings from other copies to illustrate their<br />
