A NOTE ON SOURCES AND
SPELLING
A sizeable amount of quoted poetry appears in this book. For convenience of
reference, I have quoted from the Oxford Clarendon editions of individual
authors whenever possible, or from another “standard” work widely available, as
in the case of Jonson or Milton. Although in some instances the spelling has
already been “modernized” by an editor, I have chosen to quote the texts in the
editions cited and not to embark on a practice of silently modernizing spelling. I
have, however, followed the usual orthographical practice of rendering i as j and
v as u. Quotations from classical authors are taken from the Loeb Classical
Library.
