STRENGTHS<br />

• Eight letterwinners return from a squad that<br />

engineered the biggest turnaround in Pac-10<br />

history, going from a ninth-place Conference<br />

finish in 2000 to a share of the 2001 Pac-10 title.<br />

• Fresh off an NCAA Tournament run that took the<br />

Huskies all the way to the Elite Eight, the 2001-02<br />

roster is long on depth and experience.<br />

• Three starters and four of the top five scorers<br />

return from a year ago, led by JR G Loree Payne<br />

(11.4 ppg), with 52 starts over the last two seasons.<br />

• The sophomore class boasts the other returning<br />

starters – Pac-10 All-Freshman G Giuliana<br />

Mendiola (11.1 ppg) and Honorable Mention All-<br />

Freshman F/C Andrea Lalum (9.4 ppg), an NCAA<br />

West Region All-Tournament pick. The 5-11<br />

Mendiola paced the team on the boards last<br />

season (6.3 rpg).<br />

• Washington has named four captains for 2001-<br />

02, in a move to ensure a strong balance in<br />

chemistry both on the court and off.<br />

• FR G Kristen O’Neill leads a massive talent<br />

infusion.<br />

CONCERNS<br />

• While any team would have a hard time replacing<br />

a Megan Franza and the points she contributed,<br />

the Huskies will need to find a go-to scorer<br />

when the game is on the line.<br />

• Replacing the leadership and experience lost<br />

with the graduation of six seniors.<br />

QUOTING COACH DAUGHERTY<br />

"There is no question we want to continue to build<br />

on the success we enjoyed last season. We want<br />

to improve upon the success of winning the Pac-<br />

10 Championship and being able to take the<br />

program deep into the NCAA tournament to the<br />

Elite Eight.<br />

“The big challenge for us, obviously, is losing six<br />

seniors and their leadership. But because so<br />

many players saw quality playing time last year,<br />

it’s not as if we are starting over from scratch. The<br />

fact that we started two freshmen and a sophomore<br />

the majority of the season speaks well to the<br />

talent in the program. Our bench was deep and<br />

everyone knew their role. We want to continue to<br />

build on that experience and our depth will be a<br />

key element to our continued improvement.”<br />

• In 2001, led the Huskies to a share of the Pac-<br />

10 Championship, their fourth straight<br />

postseason berth and first NCAA Elite Eight<br />

appearance since 1990.<br />

• Guided Washington to the greatest turnaround<br />

by a Pac-10 team from one year to the<br />

next in 2001 (from ninth place to tie for first).<br />

• Helped orchestrate the second-best turnaround<br />

in the nation last season, as UW finished<br />

22-10 overall to improve on an 8-22 finish<br />

in 2000.<br />

• Was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics<br />

Hall of Fame in September 2000.<br />

• Directed the Huskies to the postseason<br />

Women’s NIT in 1999.<br />

• Guided UW to back-to-back NCAA Tournament<br />

appearances in 1997 and 1998.<br />

• Washington jumped out to a 10-0 record in<br />

1998, and soared as high as No. 7 in the early<br />

season polls, before finishing with a 18-10<br />

record.<br />

• Led Washington to a 9-0 non-conference<br />

record in 1998, the first time a Husky team ever<br />

went undefeated in non-league play.<br />

• In her first season at UW (1997), she led the<br />

team to seven victories in its final eight regular<br />

season games to earn an NCAA bid (17-11<br />

• Named to the helm at Washington on May 10,<br />

1996, becoming the seventh coach in Husky<br />

women's basketball history.<br />
