WASHINGTON
NOTEBOOK
STRENGTHS
• Eight letterwinners return from a squad that
engineered the biggest turnaround in Pac-10
history, going from a ninth-place Conference
finish in 2000 to a share of the 2001 Pac-10 title.
• Fresh off an NCAA Tournament run that took the
Huskies all the way to the Elite Eight, the 2001-02
roster is long on depth and experience.
• Three starters and four of the top five scorers
return from a year ago, led by JR G Loree Payne
(11.4 ppg), with 52 starts over the last two seasons.
• The sophomore class boasts the other returning
starters – Pac-10 All-Freshman G Giuliana
Mendiola (11.1 ppg) and Honorable Mention All-
Freshman F/C Andrea Lalum (9.4 ppg), an NCAA
West Region All-Tournament pick. The 5-11
Mendiola paced the team on the boards last
season (6.3 rpg).
• Washington has named four captains for 2001-
02, in a move to ensure a strong balance in
chemistry both on the court and off.
• FR G Kristen O’Neill leads a massive talent
infusion.
CONCERNS
• While any team would have a hard time replacing
a Megan Franza and the points she contributed,
the Huskies will need to find a go-to scorer
when the game is on the line.
• Replacing the leadership and experience lost
with the graduation of six seniors.
QUOTING COACH DAUGHERTY
"There is no question we want to continue to build
on the success we enjoyed last season. We want
to improve upon the success of winning the Pac-
10 Championship and being able to take the
program deep into the NCAA tournament to the
Elite Eight.
“The big challenge for us, obviously, is losing six
seniors and their leadership. But because so
many players saw quality playing time last year,
it’s not as if we are starting over from scratch. The
fact that we started two freshmen and a sophomore
the majority of the season speaks well to the
talent in the program. Our bench was deep and
everyone knew their role. We want to continue to
build on that experience and our depth will be a
key element to our continued improvement.”
