Event I<br />

Event I represented the rod and organic humus development over rhe entire rite. It<br />

Event 2<br />

Once the rod stratum war remaved a thin organic deposit containing numsmus flat hand-<br />

,,red stoner was discovered in the eastern half <strong>of</strong> the site. This smtum was designated<br />

Event 2. Becawe <strong>of</strong> its localized positim and multitude <strong>of</strong> 1770s-178th mifacts (Figure<br />

161. this deposit is <strong>be</strong>lieved to repsent a brief occupation <strong>of</strong> the rite by soldiers from rhe<br />

British Royal Artillery during the fall <strong>of</strong> 1779 and ealy winter <strong>of</strong> 1780. OEcuionally this<br />

stmtum was difficult lo distinguish fmm the underlying hww collapse stratum. When<br />

the clear distinction was na visible. an arbiuary break was made at <strong>10</strong> cm <strong>be</strong>low the<br />

surface.<br />
