The <strong>only</strong> no" food-related ceramic form p-nt at Renews were galley pols. These<br />

small. open-mouthed vessels contained medicinal ointments, salves or elixirs (Noel<br />

Hume 1985:203). Theirslightly evened rim wwld<strong>be</strong> uwd forreeuringapaper<br />

cowring with string. Fngments Imm three galley pols were found: one fmm South<br />

Somerset. one from Nonh Devon and ow tin-glued rpeeimen (Figurer 62r-b. 63 and<br />

611. The Nonh Devan galley pot is slipped and covered with n yellow lead glue on the<br />

intenor and exterior. while the South Somenet example has m interim bmwn lead glue.<br />

The tin glazed galley pot has a son. buff.mtoured fabric covered in J. pinkish-white tin-<br />

glaze ,"rids and out. This type <strong>of</strong> pocteq, comm<strong>only</strong> known as delnwm. is named for<br />

the Dutch town <strong>of</strong> Delft (Nod Hume 1985: <strong>10</strong>6). It is difficult lo determine the eounuy <strong>of</strong><br />

origin for chi piece as this ware type was manufwtured in England and Holland. During<br />

the sixlecnth and sevenleenth centuries, mtgrant Dutch potters were <strong>of</strong>ten w dng m<br />

England and eanverrely. English potters worked in Holland. As ~f the shared labor pl<br />

was not enough to mask the pottery's provenance. the raw materials were also shared.<br />

English clay from Norfolk and Suffolk was exponed to Holland (Gamer and Amher<br />

l97?:21. thus dimnnting any ~tcmprs at dewmining the origin <strong>of</strong> lhe potteq W on<br />
