The lwgcr <strong>of</strong> the two jugs and the bottle were likely used far decanting hevcnges such as<br />

ale, wme. or eider which would normally he stored in kep or larger staved rtonge<br />

vessels. This jug was possibly made in the Merida regton (Orlramadura) <strong>of</strong> rourhwerrem<br />

Spam and is <strong>of</strong> u type that is comm<strong>only</strong> known as Merida ware or Merida style came<br />

emhenware (Figure 56). It hada venical strap handle, stood 23 cm high and had a 7.5<br />

cm wtde ealla~d opening. Iu capacity is esrimated to he 1.0 to 1.5 lit=. The exterior <strong>of</strong><br />

thtr unglued micvccous jug was bumirhcd rmmth and was decmted with vmical lines<br />

scraped down 11s ride. A single line was incised an the shoulder. An identical Merida jug<br />

(wlrh rwo incised lines instead <strong>of</strong>one) war discovered during he excavations in the<br />

Castle Street area <strong>of</strong> Plymouth England (Bmwn 197936 figure 35 Y 274).<br />

The second jug a vely small by comparison ( 9 cm high) and would have held pnhaps<br />

25 to .33 litrer (Figures 57a and 57b). 11 has a neatly evened rim, coated in an apple-<br />

green coloured lend glaze. The glaze drippd down the interior <strong>of</strong> the jug. Wear marks<br />

on the rim suggests tha it wauld have <strong>be</strong>en covered with u lid. There is evidence <strong>of</strong><br />

burning on the base <strong>of</strong> the vessel, with burnt midw on the interior. The burning<br />

indicares that it <strong>may</strong> have ut close to an open flume. which nuggeru that he contents <strong>of</strong><br />

the jug were meant to he head. The small size <strong>of</strong> this jug also suggests that it was used<br />

for sauce or gnvy whch war dispernsd in small ammtr. It wz mads fmm a pale buff-<br />

coloured came emhenwive eonwining tiny inclusioos <strong>of</strong> pirkish clay. Although this
