JAZZ BRUNCH
TO SUPPORT CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF SWLA
The deadline to purchase tickets to this year’s
Jazz Brunch, the major fundraiser for Catholic
Charities of SWLA, is this Friday, May 24.
Tickets can be purchased at Our Lady Queen
of Heaven Church Office for $50 each.
The Jazz Brunch will take place on Sunday,
June 9, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Lake
Charles Country Club. The location is serene,
the food delicious, the mimosas light and
sparkling, the entertainment lively and enjoyable
and the company relaxed.
Folks who have attended this fundraiser in
previous years know that the proceeds from ticket sales and the silent and live
auctions go toward assisting the working poor of Southwest Louisiana who contact
the Church in a critical time of need for emergency utility, rent and food assistance
among other emergency needs.
If you have become a regular at the yearly Jazz Brunch, we thank you for your
continued support. If you have never before attended, please let this be the year
you join us. Supporting Catholic Charities of SWLA by attending the Jazz
Brunch is an easy way to build up our community, because you will be partnering
with one of the best run charitable organizations in the area.
Catholic Charities of SWLA Mission Statement:
“To empower people, in the Spirit of Christ, to respond to the
basic needs of the people of Southwest Louisiana.”
THE CULTURE OF LIFE
Should those who consider themselves ‘pro-life’ clamor
for the death of Dr. Kermit Gosnell and Dzhokhar
Tsarnaev, the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect?
To quote Cardinal Avery Dulles, "The Pope and the
bishops, using their prudential judgment, have concluded
that in contemporary society, at least in countries
like our own, the death penalty ought not to be invoked,
because, on balance, it does more harm than good."
What possible harm can putting these two heinous
criminals to death bring upon society? Perhaps one answer
is that in giving the state the right to take a life for
any reason, we set a precedent where all become vulnerable.
Justice requires reparation; it may require incarceration,
maybe even for life. Yet if we are to be truly prolife,
we must consistently affirm that all life is sacred,
even that of the most heinous of criminals. There may
never be a better opportunity than in these two cases to
witness to the world that, as followers of Christ, we
stand together in truly valuing all life as sacred.
Divine Mercy is bestowed upon all, even those who
seem to us to be beyond mercy. Perhaps rather than
clamoring for their death, we could use our energy
praying for their souls, for conversion of life.
