Dispatch Editorials
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1966
Doctor shortage is community's problem
Last week's Dispatch told the story ol Dr.
C. H. Bausmun's temporary retirement from
practice because of Illness and the hospital problem
It created.
A sorlous community problem Is involved.
Our problem, as It has existed for a number
of year, is a familiar one a doctor shortage.
If this problem is solved, there is no hospital
problem. The hospital problem is relevant because
a hospital must have physicians to admit patients
and treat them. A hospital cannot operate without
physlcluns.
When The Dispatch declared last week that
the doctor shortage and hospital had hit an
e
low, thin newspaper was referring to the
obvious fact that without local physicians on the
ttulf and without patients, the hospital was at
Its economic bottom.
The Dispatch In IH reporting was net In any
way critical of the efforts of Garza Memorial
Hospital trustees, nor was any such criticism
Intended.
In fact, this newspaper has been Impressed
with tho good job the trustees, together with Hospital
Administrator W C. Stivers, have beon doing
to operate the hospital with the physicians who
are available.
A survey of county hospitals across West
Texas made recently revealed that Garza Memorial
Hospital was operated on a smaller patient
load than other hospitals, but with a much lee
tax rate required for county support and less
operating deficit per patient.
Our hospital is one of the mot efficiently
operated In the entire West Texas area from the
economic standpoint Credit all this to n hardworking
hospital board and efficient administra
Absentee voting is very important
tor.
For the first nine months of 1966, the hospital
was In considerable better finanoial shape with
only one physician on the staff most of the year
than It had been for the first nine months of 1965
when the hospital had two physicians most of the
time.
This was due to all typos of economics devised
by the hospital trustees and administrator.
Members of the hospital staff, for example.
In many cases have been selected for Individual
abilities to perform two needed Jobs, not Just
one. This has enabled the hospital to offer Just
as good service with less total personnel. Finding
and hiring experienced personnel of this kind
has taken both time and effort.
The current hospital board has been the first
to put the hospital's operations on a budget. The
county couldn't have more diligent stewardship
of hospital affairs than that exhibited by present
trustees and administrator.
One final point alo needs to be made nbout
Post's physician shortage Finding additional physicians
i the responsibility of the entire community.
It is NOT the responsibility of the hospital
trustees. Their responsibility Is the opera
tten of Garza Memorial Hospital.
That the trustees and administrator have
worked hard and are continuing to work at the
thankless task of seeking new physicians, on
either a permanent or temporary basis until Dr.
Dausman can return to practice, simply means
that they are doing all they can for this community.
nut remember, the doctor shortage Is OUR
problem as a community, not THEIRS as hospital
trustees.-J-C
FOOTBALL WILL hog the spot-lig-
In Post this weekend, with
the Denver City Mustangs, n I s o
known as the "IIIr Red", moving
into Antelope Stadium for a game
the results of which mlRht end
clRht years of Denver City domination
in District 4AA.
That Is all I am going to sny
about the game In this column,
except to repeat what I heard n
local female football fan say when
someone told her that two of Denver
City's better players are named
Hatfield. "Too bad." she sold,
"that Post doesn't have n couple
of McCoys on its team."
THE MAN UP the street sov
what you don't know won't hurt
you. but it may make you net
pretty stupid.
Someone watching me mark n
football contest blank the other day
wanted to know why I used nn "X"
to mark each choice Instead of a
"V". which he said he used. I'd
never given it any thought, but
when I told this nosey fellow that
my guess was that as many people
mark their contest blanks with
an "X" as with a "V", he begged
to differ Maybe Frank Blanton of
the Post Pharmacy, or somebody
else who Judges football contests,
con settle the argument If it gets
any bigger
Anyhow, the conversation reminded
me thnt n few months ago
I'd clipped something on the letter
"X." and after digging around
30 or to minutes In my desk debris,
I came up with It.
THE VALUE OF X
X In the Roman notation Is ten,
X Is the mark of Illiterate men,
X means a crossing, as drivers
may note,
X In n circle may count as a
vote.
X Is a quantity wholly unknown.
X Is a ruler removed from his
throne.
Xmas Is for Christmas, a season
of Win,
X in a Irttc Is pood far one kiss.
X is fer Xerxes,' the monarch
renowned.
X marks th spot where the
bmtv was found.
Pickle as air or the capricious
sox.
What n truly remarkable letter
is XI
LOOKING ACROSS the street to
pot the X's out of m eye. I se
Mayer Ilarohl Luces doine, his own
window waebtn at the Post Insurance
Aponcy. That rfnoaks well for
our mayor. Not many other
towns have a "head man" who'd
he caught washing window.
While rummaglnc. around on mv
dok to find the niece I'd clipped
nbout the letter "X." I uncovered
this clipping about the letter "O."
and. mere than Hkelv. there's
somotbing about onto of the other
letters of the alphabet buried somewhere
down there.
SOME O's
In looking through the alphabet,
you'll fmd the letter "O" a letter
lull of romance and I'll toil you
why it's so. It's used In swotting
cheerful thing It's used la mmu-Im- g
love; H's ud in tprlitait
peaceful things. Hke home a ad
house and dve It's used in words
that stand for warmth, like coal
aad also hot. It's used in words
that stand for youth, like young
and bov and tot. In spotting groom,
two O's are used to give them
ample show and when a maiden's
cheek Is kissed, she answers with
an "01" Let's take a simple sentence
that Is fug of warmth and
rher and sec how many O's in It
w'll bob up and appear "O. boy
of mine, your mother loves you
so ' In every single word but one
vou'll find there is an "0." No
nv you'H find in mlery. In
rtt, nor yet in pew. You win"
find one tucked away In snow, but
no a one In rain. There's e
in the letter "0" and.
what's mem striking, too, there's
warmth and cheer within your
hearts and "0" is found wt you!
The office manager frowned at
he elderly clerk and tald "I'm
afraid you're Ignoring our efficiency
ivstem.
"Maybe ," admitted the clerk,
"but somebody has to get the
work done."
You tnko him for n walk around the block and people
stop you to say, "What a beautiful babyl"
You try to bo modest about it, but your heart is bursting
with pride. Ho is the most beautiful baby and he's yours!
Or is he?
It can be pretty disturbing the first timo you realize that
your baby really isn't yours at all that you do not possess
him. Yet the sooner you do realize it, tho better. "Vo can't
possess another person no matter how dearly wo lovo them.
And in the case of our children, wo aro custodians, not
owners.
Ho is a beautiful baby and you, naturally, want nothing
more than for him to grow up into a fine young man. It is
your responsibility, in tho years ahead, to help him do so
and you will find the strength and guidanco to aid you in
your task in your church.
