The Connection
The beehives and bobby
socks were out in full
force July 23 as the
Reston Community Players’ Sue
Pinkman took her directing
skills to new heights in The
Little Theatre of Alexandria’s
blockbuster musical production
of “Hairspray.”
“I am very relieved,” said
Pinkman at the opening night
after-party. “The kids are fabulous,
the crew, the orchestra -
all the elements came together
to make for a fabulous opening
night.”
With a cast of more than 30
performers, Pinkman is tackling
one of the most ambitious
projects in musical theater.
“It’s been very challenging but
gratifying,” Pinkman said.
“With this large of a cast, there
were always scheduling conflicts.
And for the last eight
weeks, we rehearsed six days a
week. It’s by far the biggest
show I’ve ever done.”
More than 160 people from
throughout the region audi-
and host Ben Mankiewicz. The film
will be shown on large screens both
in-house and on the lawn, with the
“For me, it’s all about giving
people their shot,” Pinkman
said. “I feel strongly about community
theater and bringing
new people into the cast. It’s
very gratifying to see someone
discover something they love to
do.”
The spectacular production,
highlighted by dazzling choreography
by Ivan Davila, earned
a resounding and prolonged
standing ovation as the strains
of “You Can’t Stop the Beat”
brought opening night to a
close. “We all worked hard and
had a great opening night audience,”
Pinkman said. “But it
