Shuttle Service to<br />

Farmers Market<br />

Supervisor Cathy Hudgins<br />

(D-Hunter Mill) has announced<br />

the establishment<br />

of shuttle bus service to the<br />

Wednesday morning farmers market<br />

at Frying Pan Farm Park in<br />

Herndon. <strong>The</strong> shuttle will pick up<br />

from Southgate Community Center<br />

(12125 Pinecrest Road in<br />

<strong>Reston</strong>) and the Neighborhood<br />

Resource Center (1086 Elden<br />

Street, Herndon) to the farmers<br />

market, and return.<br />

Service is being provided by the<br />

Fairfax County Department of<br />

Neighborhood and Community<br />

Services (NCS).<br />

<strong>The</strong> farmers market at Frying<br />

Pan Farm Park is open each<br />

Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30<br />

p.m., located at 2709 West Ox<br />

Road in Herndon and site of the<br />

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance<br />

Program (SNAP) pilot program.<br />

SNAP beneficiaries can use their<br />

SNAP card to receive tokens and<br />

make purchases of locally grown,<br />

seasonal foods and goods directly<br />

from local farmers.<br />

In addition, Inova Health Systems<br />

will match up to the first $10<br />

in purchases made at the farmers<br />

market. Staff from Inova will be<br />

at the market for program enrollment<br />

and information.<br />

Supervisor Hudgins said, “As<br />

someone who grew up on a farm<br />

and still grows tomatoes in my<br />

backyard, I am pleased this collaboration<br />

with the Fairfax County<br />

Park Authority, NCS and Inova will<br />

provide new opportunities to<br />

stretch the family food budget<br />

with fresh, locally grown food for<br />

our most needy residents. This<br />

shuttle service will enable resi-<br />

dents with limited transportation<br />

options to enjoy the offerings at<br />

the farmers market.”<br />

Ian Martin Becomes Eagle Scout<br />

Ian Martin, recent<br />

graduate of<br />

Herndon High<br />

School and entering<br />

freshman who will<br />

matriculate at Virginia<br />

Technical Institute<br />

in fall 2011, will<br />

be honored in an<br />

Eagle Scout Court of<br />

Honor Ceremony on<br />

Saturday, Aug. 6, at<br />

12:30 p.m. in the<br />

<strong>Reston</strong> Community<br />

Center, 2310 Colts<br />

Neck Road, in <strong>Reston</strong>.<br />

Ian’s Eagle Scout<br />

project was the restoration<br />

of a walking<br />

path and assembly of<br />

a foot bridge near<br />

Bright Pond Lane in<br />

<strong>Reston</strong>. This project<br />

was supported by the<br />

<strong>Reston</strong> Association. In<br />

Ian Martin<br />

addition to erecting the bridge<br />

over a stream along a walking<br />

path, he and Troop 1970, along<br />

with family and friends picked<br />

up trash, removed invasive<br />

plants, and placed mulch along<br />

the path. Ian’s project has beautified<br />

the area and is a valuable<br />

contribution to the community.<br />

He is the son of William (Bill)<br />

Martin and Bernice Williams<br />

Martin. <strong>The</strong> family resides in<br />

<strong>Reston</strong>. Ian will attend college<br />

in the fall, on a four-year Marine<br />

Corps scholarship. He<br />

plans to become a military officer.<br />

Ian has received many<br />

local honors.<br />
