From left, Patricia Stevens, executive director of the Fairfax County Office of Public and
Bringing Business, People to Lake Anne
Residents
discuss way to
improve Lake
Anne “brand.”
By Alex McVeigh
The Connection
Members of the Fairfax
County Office of Public
and Private Partnerships
(OP3) and Visit Fairfax held
a discussion on ways to attract
more visitors and businesses to
Lake Anne. During the meeting,
which took place at the Reston
Community Center Lake Anne,
guests discussed things they believe
would make Lake Anne more
of a destination.
“One of the biggest chances Lake
Anne has is to reach people that
might come here for one thing, but
get something else out of it,” said
Patricia Stevens, executive director
of OP3. “For example, there are
dozens of hairdressers and nail
salons in this area, but none where
you can get your nails or hair done
and look out on a lake.
Stevens said they are looking at
opportunities that can start almost
immediately, such as creating
some sort of package that allows
people to come for a day, get nails
done, explore the local area and
then have dinner all while at Lake
Anne.
EVE THOMPSON, head of the
www.ConnectionNewspapers.com
Lake Anne Merchants Committee,
says they have strategies in place
to help market and promote businesses
in Lake Anne, but they are
still looking for businesses to fill
the vacancies.
“We’ve got a beautiful vacancy
right on the corner of the ‘J’, and
we have plans to support them
with graphics, designs and
signage,” she said. “We just need
ways to let more people know
about this place.”
Beatrice Shields, a 40-year
Reston resident, said she would
“Reston Town
Center has a brand,
how do we create
that same brand?”
— Ken Knueven, Reston
Association Lake Anne/Tall
Oaks director
like to see Lake Anne to host attractions
that would be closer to
home for many Restonians.
“How about making some sort
of foreign film night? I have passes
for the Fairfax Cinema, but they’re
a year old, because I don’t want
to go that far,” she said. “What
about having something like a foreign
film night, then maybe some
sort of discount deal for dinner at
a restaurant here. That would be
a great way to bring people to Lake
Anne for an entire evening.”
Ken Knueven, Reston Associa-
tion Lake Anne/Tall Oaks director,
said his time working the Reston
Association booth at the Reston
Festival gave him some ideas.
“I spent two days in the RA
booth, and there were a lot of
people from Reston Town Center,
but also a lot from Chantilly, Arlington
and some from as far as
South Carolina. But they were all
together at Reston Town Center at
that time,” he said. “I think Lake
Anne can get the low-hanging
fruit, but we need to know how to
get those people from Chantilly,
Alexandria, Ashburn to come to
Lake Anne. Reston Town Center
has a brand, how do we create that
same brand?”
VISIT FAIRFAX is a nonprofit
organization funded 100 percent
by the hotel tax, whose mission is
to enhance economic and social
growth through marketing and
promotion. According to Visit
Fairfax, Fairfax County brought in
$2.406 billion in tourism in 2006,
which is about 40 percent of
Virginia’s overall tourist income.
Visit Fairfax President and CEO
Barry Biggar says that Lake Anne’s
architecture, history and geography
could make it a destination
within Reston.
“Tourism is an amazing industry
to take advantage of, and Lake
Anne is a compelling destination
for many reasons,” Biggar said.
“But for a lot of people who come
to Reston, especially on business,
they never see anything outside of
Reston Town Center.”
Entitlement?
By Jack Kenny-
Past President, Republican
Club of Greater Reston
Let’s start off with a few statistics.
In the confines of
Reston there are a little
over 57,000 registered voters. Currently,
about 10,780 are aged 62
or older and presumably receiving
Social Security benefits. That’s
close to 19 percent of the registered
voters. In five years, when
the bulk of the so-called Baby
Boomers are eligible for Social
Security benefits the percentage
jumps to over 24 percent. We may
assume, in five years the
population of Reston
will increase by perhaps
20,000. However, the
current percentages are
expected to stay about the same.
Virtually all of Reston’s over-62
population has worked their adult
lives and paid into the FICA (Social
Security Trust Fund) for some
40+ years. A substantial number
are still working and contributing
to the Trust Fund. Of course, their
benefits increase each year they
work. If our rate of purchase was
about 4 percent over the 40 years,
with the matching employer’s contribution,
our annuity would be
$850,000: a tidy
sum that would
provide each beneficiary
with
about $20,000 a
year for the next
30 years. In reality,
the individual
and employer
contribution is
more like $1.25
million dollars. A
private purchased
annuity return
would be substantially greater
given inflation and the ups and
downs of the economy.
As I have written in
previous columns, Social
Security started out
as a voluntary program.
Through the years it became a
mandatory program. Then LBJ
came along and picked the lock
box hijacking the huge pot of trust
funds for the War on Poverty. By
the way, poverty has won that war.
Now the politicians have muddied
the waters by changing the
approach using the word entitlements.
Somehow, we are supposed
to think of our forced annuity as
being a gift from the government.
In fact, it is our money: extracted
from our paychecks
and from
our employers.
The principle
upon which this
program was
founded is the
same basis for
which we sent
Bernie Madoff to
jail.
Through the
years, the politicians
have used
this annuity to
spend it on social programs: expanding
the beneficiary pool without
concurrent contributions. It
has gotten so far out of whack, we
are now facing the prospect of receiving
only $.78 on each dollar
we invested. Would anyone in
their right mind buy an annuity
from a financial institution, insurance
company or whatever with
the prospect that the financial institution
would keep 22 percent of
the purchased annuity to distribute
to others as administrative expenses?
That is what is happening
now. While the forthcoming
election is for state and local offices,
send a message to the politicians:
It is not an entitlement but
a financial contract. Vote Nov 8.
nonprofits and charities, details about your
club or other organization.
Time to Discuss
Future Is Now
To the Editor:
When I pick my granddaughter
up at Terraset after school, there
are many grandparents waiting for
kids. That’s a big change from the
early 1980s when my daughter
was a student at Sunrise Valley.
She tells me nobody she knew at
her school had grandparents living
in Reston. We have become a
settled community with deep roots
over the years since Reston was
first created.
Our founder, Bob Simon, has
said recently that density equals
community. He is very eager for
the changes that will bring additional
people and development to
Reston. Right now Town Center
and Dulles Corridor are being considered
by the Reston Master Plan
Special Study Task Force for additional
development. But soon the
county will turn its attention to the
part of Reston called the PRC, the
Planned Residential Community.
Then our neighborhoods and the
shopping centers will be considered
for additional density in
Phase 2.
The time to discuss this Phase 2
of the Task Force is now. Our
The Fairfax County Park Authority
welcomes canines to the several
dog parks present in the county.
Next to Baron Cameron Park in Reston,
an off-leash dog area gives canines the
chance to free play.
A separate area for small dogs is
present, while larger dogs can run freely
in a fenced section next to them.
At times, the Baron Cameron Dog Park
is filled with dozens of pets and their
Melinda and Tom Logan, Sterling
“Max is very sweet and fairly intelligent.
He went through doggie training easily.
However he’s still working on greeting at
the door. We let him run around and get
tired out. Coming to the park helps him to
learn how to behave and socialize with others.”
Baron Cameron Dog Park gives canines a place to play.
Tom Krasselty, Reston
“Katie likes treats. She’ll go to others
for treats. She loves to cadge treats from
humans the most when she comes to the
park.”
owners according to Charlie Gillen from
Reston. Yet everyone is expected to look after
his or her dog, he said.
“It’s well kept and people are cautious
about their dog and keeping the place neat
and organized,” said Oak Hill resident Peg
Vanvlack.
Where dogs can come and socialize, dog
owners get a chance to meet new people as
well.
“This is social spot,” said Tom Krasselty
from Reston.
“Frankie (front) is an Irish Terrier, probably
one of the only ones that comes to this
park. We love to come to the park because
not only can the dog interact with others,
but the humans can too.”
Peg Vanvlack, Oak Hill
“Mosby (right) is our first Golden Retriever.
He’s sweet, but can also be foul
and evil. He loves to come out to the park
and looks forward to it everyday. He has
a group of friends. It does him best to be
out with the dogs.”
out to the park at least once a day.
“We’ll sit here and do this all day long,”
said Gillen.
At the Baron Cameron Dog Park,
shaded benches circle the off-leash area
so visitors have a place to sit and watch
their pets play. Built by regular visitor
Krasselty, garbage cans resting on
wooden bases give visitors easy access for
waste disposal.
While the park unites community members
to keep the success of the park going,
the pets that come out learn from
their owners how to properly play.
nothing but a lap dog. We call her that
because she’ll go sit on anybody’s lap.”
though they are different breeds. They love to sleep by each other and are never far apart. Puck is the best
Love at First Sight
Kira’s first complete sentence at age 2
was, “Can I have a dog?” It quickly became
her most frequent refrain. She acquired
an extensive collection of stuffed
dogs, but it didn’t fill the need. In 2010,
we fostered a set of five puppies —
heaven! When they were adopted we
fostered a dog that had five puppies days
later — heaven again! She begged to
keep one, but after eight years the answer
was still no. Just as the last puppy
went to its new home, we saw a gorgeous
border collie mix puppy on petfinder.com
— her dream breed! Mom finally relented.
We drove to Baltimore to meet
her and it was mutual love at first sight.
We’ve had her a year now, and, while she
is definitely Kira’s dog, Riley is the perfect
dog for us. She is smart, playful,
loyal, friendly, and happy. The lab in her
loves water, and she and Kira have
proven to be a talented dog agility team.
Oh, and she is great with our two cats.
Yes, Kira, you can have a dog.
An Immortal Virginian
By Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum
State Delegate (D-36)
Ask Virginians the name of
a native of the Commonwealth
who has had the
greatest impact on history, and you
are likely to get a variety of answers.
Few are likely to give the
name of the Virginian whom I believe
has had and will continue to
have the greatest influence on
human history:
Henrietta
Commentary
Lacks. Unfortunately
few
have heard of her, and her name
does not appear in many history
books. All that is changing with the
2010 publication of the book, The
Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,
by Rebecca Skloot.
Henrietta was born in 1920 in
Roanoke and grew up in Clover in
Southside Virginia. She moved to
Baltimore as an adult. She died at
age 31 of cancer. Her body was
returned to Clover and buried in
county supervisor, Cathy
Hudgins, will stand for election in
the fall and right now, she runs unopposed.
Her re-election will give
her a mandate to continue planning
extraordinary changes to
Reston.
Significant numbers of our
neighborhoods will be considered
by the Task Force for redevelopment
in order to increase density
and county revenues. Reston Association
Board President
Kathleen Driscoll-McKee stated in
a letter to the Reston Patch that
no one will have to sell out unless
they choose to do so. She was misinformed.
Only 75 percent of
neighbors in a neighborhood have
A Breath of
Fresh Air
To the Editor:
Contrary to Mr. Simon [“Disappointing,”
Reston Connection, July
13-19, 2011], I find Mr. Lovaas a
breath of fresh air. He brings conscious
thought to the table — germane
issues which apparently Mr.
Simon would prefer were not discussed.
1. “Density is community” is
ludicrous. Why not say a traffic
jam is community? The discussion
seems to get stuck on the effects
of increasing the Reston population
at the expense of traffic,
www.ConnectionNewspapers.com
an unmarked grave in
a family burial plot.
What Henrietta never
knew and her family
has only in recent years
found out is that when
she was being treated
for cervical cancer at
Johns Hopkins University
Hospital, small tissue
samples were removed
from her body.
Amazingly, the cells
from these samples did what scientists
had never seen before.
They could be kept alive and
grown. The cell line that was
started was named for its unwitting
donor “HeLa” and became the
first immortal cell line.
HeLa cells were used by Dr.
Jonas Salk to help develop a vaccine
for polio.
The cells have been used around
the world for research into cancer,
AIDS, effects of radiation and toxic
substances, gene mapping, human
sensitivity to many substances,
oper.
Right now 50 of our neighborhoods
are zoned high-density.
However, many were built at medium
density. Because of the zoning
a developer can offer to buy
out the neighborhood and redevelop
at the higher density “by
right.”
Should the Task Force recommend
to the Board of Supervisors
that the area zoned high density
be increased over what it is now,
many more than those 50 neighborhoods
will be available for potential
redevelopment.
The time to discuss the future
of Reston is now, before the election.
It is not too late for an independent
candidate to file to run
for the Hunter Mill seat on the
Board of Supervisors. I hope that
someone in Reston will have a dif-
schools and open space, things
which made Reston an oasis in an
area that has been rapidly overdeveloped.
2. Developers are primarily
interested in maximizing profits —
to assume otherwise is naïve. Why
should the community assume
that the developers’ sense of what
is “good” is in the community’s
best interest?
Write
and others too numerous
to mention
here. It is estimated
that scientists have
grown more than 20
tons of her cells.
More than 11,000
patents have been
granted involving
the cells. Henrietta
nor her family ever
received any compensation.
This week the Virginia
Department of Historic Resources
is erecting a roadside
marker near Clover to recognize
her important contribution to
medical science. I hope to attend
its unveiling.
I recommend reading Skloot’s
book. A documentary has been
produced, and more are likely to
follow. A humble African American
woman of very limited means
has had a profound effect on all
our lives. She may truly be the only
immortal Virginian.
ferent idea of what community is
than Bob Simon. I hope someone
will run as an independent.
I believe the connections between
people, families and friends
are what constitute community. I
hope that my family will be able
to continue living here until my
great-grandchildren are also
Restonians. We have come to love
this place. I hope my family will
not be driven out by the frenzy of
residential redevelopment being
contemplated by the county.
We need to have an open community
forum about the buy-out
of Reston’s clusters by developers
and the impact that will have on
our town. An election provides a
prime opportunity to begin that
discussion.
have their own political agendas,
is why Mr. Lovaas’ input on the issues
is a breath of fresh air.
With a good part of
the region baking
under sweltering
conditions and
record breaking temperatures, the
final meets of the Reston Swim
Team Association (RSTA) season
played out on Saturday morning.
With three teams (Lake Audubon,
Hunters Woods and North Hills)
entering the final week tied for the
league lead, there was sure to be
drama as the meets unfolded. And
indeed there was. With Lake
Audubon far out-distancing their
opponent (Glade), all eyes were
on the Hunters Woods - North Hills
meet. In this all-important encounter,
Hunters Woods out-swam
North Hills by a score of 599-532.
With this victory, Hunters Woods
claimed a share of the league
championship with Lake Audubon
for the second time in the past
three years.
And while the team competition
captured most of the attention on
Saturday, another individual
record fell. Joanne Fu continued
her assault on the record books at
Lake Anne. In the girls (11 -12)
butterfly, she bested her old time
of 33.80 with a new mark of 33.71.
Clothes to a
Decision
By KENNETH B. LOURIE
To say that I have a tired wardrobe is an
affront to all wardrobes, tired or otherwise.
To say that my clothes could use a bit of an
update is a bit like saying Davy Crockett and
Jim Bowie were undermanned at The Alamo.
My lack of initiative with respect to such purchases
has been a problem my entire life,
beginning with my involvement in the
“Husky” department at a very young age. It
was primarily my mother’s problem until I
left home to attend college. College presented
its own unique set of circumstances
which prevented any significant clothing evolution
(maturation?) – on my part. Marriage, a
few years later, further complicated these
clothing indecisions. Though I held fast and
firm to my lack-of-clothing instincts – and
deferred my purchases as much as possible,
eventually, there were fissures and newer
clothes occasionally were purchased, against
my worse judgment. However, my wardrobe
was never one to be proud of; it was – simply
put, one that couldn’t be avoided, by my
wife, Dina, which of course presented all
kinds of discussions.
Time passed. Heck, decades passed; there
were some good clothing purchases and
some not so good. Generally speaking, it
wasn’t pretty. After so many years, it became
apparent – even to my wife, that perhaps she
didn’t have the proper training to deal with
my preference for “casual attire,” shall we
say. Juxtaposing the fact that she always
dressed nicely and appropriately for the
situation, my clothing appearance left a lot to
be desired, to put it kindly. To put it succinctly:
it was atrocious. But I didn’t care too
much. I always rationalized that “It’s what’s
inside that counts.” I was never a clothesmake-the-man
kind of person. I was more of
a clothes-cover-the-man kind of person.
Then two-and-a-half years ago, I was diagnosed
with stage IV lung cancer, “a terminal
disease,” according to my oncologist, if there
ever was one; rather convincingly when he
suggested that perhaps I should take that trip
I’ve always dreamed of taking. “WHAT!” At
that point, normal had left the building, and
whatever “normal” life I thought I had – good
or bad, was over and subject to major reevaluation.
There was a new sheriff in town
and his name was cancer. Everything
changed, especially priorities. And new clothing
was hardly a priority, and unlikely to
move up the list of things I now cared about,
given the seriousness of my diagnosis/ prognosis.
And when I stopped working and
began chemotherapy the next week, followed
soon thereafter by a deteriorating
physical condition, my house-bound status
didn’t seem to necessitate much of a clothing
upgrade.
Eventually I got off the couch and out of
the house and tried to resume/re-start a semi
normal life (the new “normal,” diagnosedwith-cancer
normal). I happily wore what
clothes I had and didn’t concern myself – too
much, with my outward appearance, other
than always wearing a ball cap to cover my
bald head. More time passed and I lived (survived
seems so negative) beyond the backend
of my oncologist’s original prediction:
“two years.” Accordingly, Dina has started
suggesting that since I’m still alive, perhaps I
should buy some new clothes. After all, if I’ve
lived this long, maybe I’m going to live a little
bit longer, and dressing like I have a future
might help me in the present. A present
which I’m grateful to have and a future I
always hoped to see.
