tertainment of the resort's
vacationers.
The Chamber of Commerce
is one of the most active and
efficient Chambers to be
found in any community of a
size comparable to Ocean
City. Its duties are manifold.
It has the responsibility of
looking after the civic interest
of property holders and
business proprietors in the
community. It serves as a
clearing house of information
about the resort for those who
plan to visit this seashore
community. The Chamber
protects all residents permanent
and transit alike,
from the intrusion of agencies
which would bilk or defraud
them.
One of its principal
segments is the Retail
Merchants Division. The
Division is continually on the
alert for the appearance of
any person or concern which
would by unethical practices
discourage the confidence
that residents and visitors
have in the local shopkeepers
and merchants. The Division
also plans and produces
several sales each year.
Over and above its
rudimentary activities, the
Chamber of Commerce
contributes actively to the
program of events which is
presented here in Ocean City
each year. The Chamber
sponsors the annual Ocean
host to the annual Welcome
Night at Ocean City High
School. On this occasion, the
Chamber joins with residents
in welcoming into the community
all those .who have
established their home in
Ocean City during the past
year.
One of the major events of
the summer season staged by
the Chamber is the famed
spectacular Night in Venice, a
marine pageant which will
sail bayfront on July 30 this
year.
The Chamber stages Sand
Castle Building Contests on
the beach here.
The Chamber helps staff the
information center which the.
city maintains at the entrance
to Ocean City on the Somers
Point blvd.. just west of the 9th
st. bridge.
The Chamber also sponsors
the Fall Fishing Derby, an
angling tournament with
prizes staged from September
through November.
also for Atlantic Community
enrollment are full-time
students at the College, while
the remainder are parttime
students enrolled in Saturday
and evening courses.
Atlantic Community
College is in a striking rural
setting. The campus consists
of 546 acres and nine contemporary-design
buildings
which form a picturesque
complex. In December, 1963,
the New Jersey Department
of Education granted approval
for the establishment
of ACC, which then became
the second community college
to be organized by the State in
April, 1964.
The courses are designed
for associate degree transfer
Stockton State is a four-year
college emphasizing the
liberal arts and science.
Named after Richard
Stockton, one of the first
graduates of the College of
New Jersey (now Princeton)
and a signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
Stockton State has been in the
state of organization for
several years.
The college opened its
academic doors in the Fall of
1971, but not on its colorful
1,000 acre woodlands campus.
Construction at the site was as
yet uncompleted and the
board of trustees leased accommodations
at an Atlantic
City boardwalk hotel for the
inaugural semester. The oncampus
classes began in the
fall of 1972. The charter class
numbered about 1,000.
A growth rate of 500
students a year is projected to
a planned student body of
7,500 by 1980. The college
anticipates construction of oncampus
housing for about 50
percent of the student body.
Schools
busy in
summer
The Ocean Board' of
Education offers students at
both the elementary and high
school levels makeup and
enrichment classes during the
summer months.
- Organized under the
auspices of the New Jersey
State Department of
Education, the summer
sessions have for their purpose
makeup, refresher,
enrichment and advanced
credit study for students.
Makeup subjects require
that students receive 60 hours
of instruction to make up a
failure in term work. Credit is
given for successful completion.
Refresher subjects
are offered for students
wishing to improve on topics
in which they are lacking.
Enrichment classes offer 60
hours of instruction to
students who wish to extend
their knowledge of subjects
which was during the regular
school term slowed down by
classroom schedules.
At the elementary level, the
program has the dual purpose
of helping pupils gain confidence
and success in needed
areas of reading and
mathematics, and also to
give experience in these basic
skills they already have.
The high school program
covers all subjects in
business, certain academic
weaknesses, education and
college preparatory
education. These include
bookkeeping, shorthand, the
languages, physics,
mathematics, history,
biology, journalism and many
others.
Despite the fact that the
summer sessions are conducted
at a time of the year
when dress at the shore is
somewhat on the scanty side,
summer school students are
required to dress as they
would during the regular
school year, with the exception
the clothing be of
lighter weight. Bermuda
shorts, bathing suits and bare
feet are not allowed.
St.. Augustine's opened here
in September, 1926, in an
The Parent-Teacher
In 1952, St. Augustine's
was laid in
November of that year and
The new school was completed
in December 1953 with
