st. and Boardwalk and extend
south. Each exhibitor will be
provided eight feet of Boardwalk
space and must bring his
own materials for displaying
entries. /
The Ocean City show is
designed to provide
photographers with a unique
showcase for their work.
Thousands of summer visitors
and residents will see the
photographs framed against
the Atlantic Ocean.

ANIMALS ARE SHOWOFFS
Anyone who likes animals
should be here in Ocean City
on July 15. That's the date the
Recreation Department
stages its annual Pet Fair at
the Recreation Center. Cute
animals and unpredictable
youngsters are the show bill.

Police
Courteous, vigilant
Ocean City during the offseason
has a very low in-
' stance of crime and mayhem;
and the city's 60-member.'
Police Department is not too
pressed in the completion of
its duties:
But during the late spring,
summer and early fall months
when visitors come to the
resort in great numbers the
work of the police is greatly
expanded. During this period,
a corps of about 35 temporary
police officers are pressed,
into duty.
> Even at the height of the
summer season, high crime is
practically nil in Ocean City.
With the crush of 100,000
people in town over a weekend
there must come some trouble
makers and bad customers.
These over the years have
been handled quite adroitly by
the well-trained Ocean City
police.
The police do have their
troubles with car thefts, cat
burglars, thieves, disorderly
persons, drunk drivers and all
the other culprits who add to a
community's social ills, but,
thankfully, they represent
only a fraction of the yeararound
or summer
population.
The police officers attend
schools and courses offered
periodically during the year
by the FBI, State. Police and
other county, state and
- federal' law enforcement
agencies. The officers are
'kept up to date on the latest
crime prevention methods.
The biggest task of* the
Police Department in Ocean
. City appears to be control of
the tremepdous . volume of
traffic in and around the
resort during the summer
vacation season.
The. Ocean City Police
Department is the Official
Police Training Academy in
Cape 'May County. Local
police officials and officers
conduct classes in basic police
work and different phases of
public safety to recruits and
advancing officers from
Police Departments and
Patrols throughout the
County.
The local Department
maintains a state-sponsored
traffic and accident unit. This
specialized group concentrates
on traffic safety.
The effectiveness of the unit is
reflected -in a reduction of
traffic accidents on the
resort's streets and entrance
boulevards. There has not
been a traffic fatality here
since 1972.
Firefighters
Loss perennially low
Dollar-for-dollar Ocean City
has about the smallest annual
fire loss of any community of
similar size in Southern New
Jersey, and this is thanks to a
well-trained, ever-alert Fire
Department.
The principal method of the
Fire Department in fighting
fire is prevention. The fire
fighters actually work longer
hours preaching and teaching
fire prevention in Ocean City
than they spent in actual fire
fighting.
In 1976, less than one percent
of the property
threatened by flames in
Ocean City was damaged by

estimated $137,200.
In 1976, the city's firemen
and equipment responded to
309 alarms, including 41 false
alarms. This averages out to
less than one run a day.
During the year, Department
fire safety teams inspected
215 hotels and 139
business places. Six hundred
property owners turned in self
inspection reports on fire
. safety conditions in their
homes and buildings. The
city's four schools; five
theatres, 12 churches and 15
public buildings were inspected
by the safety teams.
Members of the Department
attended schools and
courses in fire fighting
techniques and first aid.
The Fire Prevention
program included fire drills in
local schools, lectures and
demonstrations by fire
fighters, distribution of fire
prevention posters and
pamphlets, and setting up of
three public window displays
on fire safety.
Teams of fire fighters make
systematic inspections of all
public buildings in the
community. The fire
prevention program is
brought into private homes by
a "self check" system in
which householders are encouraged
to make periodic
checks against fire hazards in
the home.
The firemen work closely
with school children in the job
of preventing fires before they
can get started. In addition to
regular prevention programs
in the schools, the school
children are recruited to
prompt their parents to enroll
in the home safety check
program. This has proven
quite effective.
Heavy emphasis is also
placed on fire hazard checks
in the public area. Hotels and
motels sleeping 30 or more
people are required by state
law to have periodic safety
inspections by fire marshals.
Similar investigations are
encouraged and pursued in
smaller hotels, motels,
rooming houses, guest houses
and similar accommodations
for visitors. ,
The program has paid off
over the years. The Ocean
City Fire Department enjoys
the lowest fire loss rate of any
fire department or fire
company in the Cape-Atlantic
area.
