on Trans Fair '77 for members
of the Rotary Club last Thursday
evening in Chichi's in
Somers Point. -^
Trans Fair "77 is the-name
August 17 to 21 on the NAFEC
grounds in Pomona/The exhibit
Cowart is chairman of the
Fair. He explained the purpose
is to draw attention to the opportunities
and advantages of
South Jersey for manufacturing.
It will receive both
federal and state funding
augmented by admission fees.
The speaker reported that
effort is being extended to
in the exhibits and consider
establishing manufacturing in
this area.
Frost-damaged holly trees
will recover, expert says
"There has been considerable
damage to the holly
trees in this area, but don't
worry, they'll come back." So
stated . Dan Fenton, of the
American Holly Farm in
Millville, to members of the
Exchange Club meeting
Monday evening at Daniel's in
Somers Point.
In telling the history of the
American Holly Farm Fenton
recounted that in 1921 Clarence
R. Wolf started the New Jersey
Silica Sand Company. Being a
religious man and not believing
in giving his costomers a bottle
of whiskey for Christmas, he
wanted to give them something
indicative of southern New
Jersey so in 1928 he struck upon
. the idea of sending a holly
plant.
Fenton went on to say that the
idea blossomed continuing until
1971 when the holly orchard was
purchased and went commercial.
. "We now propagate about
200,000 cuttings a year," he
continued. "During the months
of November and December we
play hast to about 5,000 people a
week to see our holly farm"
Fenton then spoke about
pruning the holly trees. He said
the more you cut them, the
better they grow. If you cut the
tops they will grow out to the
side and get more bushy.
The oldest holly on record is
in New Bern. N.C. It is 72 feet
high, four feet and 11 inches in
diameter and, through instrument
borings, it was found
that the tree is 410 years old.
He reminded his audience of
the 300-year-old Shoemaker
Holly on the Parkway in
Marmora. Fenton was instrumental
in saving this tree
from the bulldozer when the
Parkway was being built.
Following the program
service awards were presented.
A five-year pin was given Don
Miskill, 10-year awards went to
Louis (G.G.) Mazzarella and
Walt Johnson, a 15-year award
to Herb Brownlee and a 20-year
award to Roy Gillian.
