A fleet of masquaraded
boats made more colorful in a
setting of a brilliantly lighted
and gaily decorated bayfront
sets the scene for the annual
Ocean City Night in Venice
marine carnival. The nautical
mardi gras is scheduled for
Saturday evening, July 30,
this year.
Prizes areawarded in a half
dozen categories, for boats of
all sizes, from the littlest
dingy to the most palatial
cabin cruiser. Boat owners
participate with considerable
enthusiasm and the resulting
spectacle is a high point
entertainment at Ocean Cil
in the summer season.
The Ocean City Night in
Venice has its progenitor in a
traditional boat pageant on
the canals of Venice, Italy.
There had been boat parades
in the early days of the resort,
but it was not until the city's
Golden Jubilee Celebration
back in 1956 did the event take
on any appreciable proportions.
Now it has grown to one
of the biggest marine events
on the entire eastern coast of
the United States.
The nautical pageant begins
in the upper reaches of Great
Egg Harbor Bay and sails
South along Beach Thorofare,
which is the western water

Fireworks blaze in night sky over bay

fleet of decorated boats sails
in and out of the various
lagoons along the route, and'
normally with its return to the
starting point the lights
adorning the craft make the
procession a fantasy in color.
Bayfront property owners
add to the gaiety by
decorating their properties
for the occasion and
festooning colorful lights all
along the way. The Night in
Venice boat parade is one of
the most entertaining
features offered during the
resort's summer season, and
once seen is not forgotten and
not satisfied; visitors return
every year just for this
