The boardwalk is one of the
major attractions at' the
pleasures are numerous on
Ocean City's 85-foot wide
boardwalk...the widest of its
kind in the world.
For the edification of those
. prospective visitors who
never saw a boardwalk, it is a
veritable avenue of planks
four miles long raised from
the beach sand on wooden or
Walking on boards is an
experience that is nostalgia to
STAY AT
, native to the beach. In (he ofd
days ' sidewalks ' were,
literally, boardwalks, The
first boardwalk in Ocean City
was built in 1880, and it was
not along the beachfront It
was wooden planks laid along
the meadow route from the
resort's principal wharf
(there were no bridges in
those days) to the town's
camp meeting ground.
In 1888 the townspeople and
visitors tired of sand in their
shoes when they strolled the
beach and the first seaside
"walk" was constructed.
Planks were laid across
railroad ties on the beach
from 4th st. to 8th st. The next
year it was extended to 13th
st. This boardwalk was taken
up every winter, and stored
away safely until the next
summer.
In 1905. the 'walk was raised
off the sand and set on eightfoot
wooden pilings. It
coursed the beachfront from
2nd st. to 13th st. In 1928, a
multi-million dollar fire
destroyed two blocks of the
boardwalk from 8th st. to 10th
st. When it was rebuilt it was
extended considerably from
St. James pi. to 23rd st: That
Respect the water
One of the best bits of advice
the "native" wilL give the
visitor is..."show the greatest
respect for water while
swimming."
Years of constant
association with water has
instilled in lifelong residents
the knowledge that the water
can be as dangerous- at all
times as it can be delightful on
a hot July day.
If the beachfront bathers
will enter the surf only on
protected beaches and heed
the warnings and advice of the
lifeguards, there is little to
The Ocean City Concert
Orchestra will open its 1977
summer season on the
boardwalk Music Pier on
Sunday evening, July 3, with
director John Warrington
giving the downbeat at 8 p.m.
sharp.
The orchestra performs five
nights a week, Sunday
through Thursday. The
concerts are open to the
public, free of any admission
charge.
The orchestra will be
recruited from the best talent
available in this area. All the
instrumentalists are
professional musicians of
varied backgrounds from
syne of the nation's outstanding
symphonies to
theatre and radio orchestras.
A few of the members have
been playing here every
summer for 10,12 or 15 years.
Guest soloists will be on the
program virtually every night
during the season, with many
of the more popular male and
female singers remaining a
full week or longer. The
soloists range from well
established operatic, musical
comedy or television stars to
promising newcomers on
their way to prominence.
Free summer concerts are
an old tradition in Ocean City,
.for the resort has been offering
such an attraction, in
one form or another for about
a century. Originally the
brass band was the popular
form of entertainment, but
eventually it gave way to a
small string ensemble and
finally to the present orchestra,
which has been
retained in approximately the
same size and makeup for
several decades.
More than 1,300 persons can
be seated in the spacious
accommodations on the Music
Pier, and the auditorium is
filled to capacity almost
every evening. However,
many more can be seated on
the outside pavilion where
they can enjoy the music and
the cool ocean breezes at one
and the same time.
