Beach
The seaside is like nothing
else in -,the world.. The
majestic sweep of the sea and
the immeasurable reach of
the blueV a. sunlit sky is a
•. background ol fun and
• relaxation not to be found in
the mountains, the deserts,
the rural countryside! The
seashore is almost regal in itsatmosphere.
.
Nowhere else in the world
will the sunworshipper find a
better bathing beach than the
strand in Ocean City, where
the pure white, soft and
granular grains of sand
provide a comfortable delight
for surf bathing or just
lethargic sunning.
Safety is the one feature the
visitor looks for in a beach,
especially those families with
young children who delight in
spending their summer days
in the surf. The Ocean City
beach slopes gently into the
water, with no sharp drop-offs
under the surf.
Cleanliness is also a
desirable attraction to any
beach. In Ocean City the
water in the surf is as pure as
nature can make it. There are
no stagnant ponds, brackish
water at the water's edge to
spoil the clean, warm and
invigorating salt water.
Constant tides virtually
Warm sand and clean water under
a pleasant sun a good prescription
for health fun and relaxation
assure a change of "water in
the surf every 12 hours. .
Andihe-sunf tuning over the
. panorama of white sand and
glistening surf is a tonic for
tired minds and bodies. There
is a comfortable lethargy in a -
day on the beach and in the
surf which seems to dissipate
all the aches of the body and
the anxieties of the mind. A
day on the beach is a restful,
pleasant experience enjoyed
, by hundreds of thousands of
visitors each summer in
Ocean City.
The Greeks had a word for
it. Health. Way back B.C. the
Greeks and the Romans found
their fun and relaxation by the
Mediterannean Sea. The sea
air, sea, sun and sea water
were the ingredients of the
health spa these ancients
were wise enough to seek out
and enjoy.
There never were any
ancient Greeks or Romans on
the Ocean City beach, but
there were others of bur
predecessors who found rest
and relaxation on the warm
sands and clean waters of the
Ocean City' beachfront.
Several hundred years ago
entire tribes of Indians
migrated to the Jersey
beachfront at the first breath
of spring.
Lazy days in the warm sun on the Ocean City beach is therapeutic as well as
South Ocean City
growing community
South Ocean City is the
fastest growing section of the
resort these days, and this
growth is placing demands for
city services in that neighborhood.
The area has what could be
called its own "municipal
building" on West av. at 46th
st. The new facility opened
early last year and houses
police and fire sub-stations,
the city police garage and
electrical bureau, and an
information center and subpost
office. -
The facility was needed tc
better response time for
police and fire protection in
the south precincts of the
resort.
ORIGINAL INHABITANTS
The original inhabitants of
Cape May County were the
Lenni-Lenape. Indians, a
branch of the Algonquin Indians.
The last chief of the
Lenni-Lenape, King Nummy,
is buried on Nummy Island
near Hereford Inlet. After
burying their king, the tribe
left the county and'went to
, Indiana, settling on the banto
: of the Wabash River.
THE OCEAN CITY SENTINEL-LEDGER
Th
, Back almost 100 years ago
when Peck's Beach was
founded as a "Christian
community" by the Methodist
ministers who, first ventured
onto the island, it was planned
that this seaside worship spa
would strictly observe Sunday
as a day of worship.
Down through the years
with the modification of the
"Christian" thought and
practice, the restrictions laid
down by the founding fathers
were relaxed from time to
time. Ocean City is not the
"closed" town it was on
Sundays in early years, but
many of the Sunday sales
restrictions are still in force.
City officials and business
interests of the community
have over the years discussed
modification of the strict
sabbath. The latest
modification has been this
past winter by a blue ribbon
Sunday law study panel
comprising local officials and
citizens. The panel calls for
slight liberalization of the
existing Sunday law.
The proposed ordinance is
