PAGE 16 — SECTION TWO THE OCEAN CITY SENTINEL-LEDGER THURSDAY. APRIL 14.1977
Despite Donny Barton,
Birnbaum thinks things
could get tougher ;
' When you can boast one of the
finest 18-year-old tennis players
in three states on your team the
picture generally tends. to be
rosy. But Ocean City coach Phil
Birnbaum, trying to grab his
fourth straight South Jersey
championship this year, isn't so
sure the season ahead might
not be tougher.
"Sure, we've got Donny
Barton," Birnbaum said, "and
there are a few other positions
where we'll do alright. But
there are some problems that
might make things difficult for
us this year."
One of those problems is an
advance to Group Three. The
Raiders had won the Group
the year we move up to Three
quality teams," Birnbaum
said "We expect a lot of trouble
from Collingswood (they were
state finalists last year) along
with Washington Township,
Mobrestown and West Deptford.
Washington Township has
a super team this year. The
It is generally conceded that
Barton will supply Birnbaum
with at least one point every
match. The brilliant senior,
ranked third in the state in his
age bracket, has never lost to a
South Jersey-Opponent in three
full varsity seasons. His three
losses have all come in state
championship rounds. "Donny
had a very successful indoor
season and he is getting his
game together right now. I
think he's ready Tor another
great year."
But the Raider coach still has
a few more problems to contend
with. ' And a variety of
problems, they are. "Our
second doubles team, Sean and
Kevin injured his arm and can't the rules (you're supposed to
serve properly." Both of the play your best at number one,
Barnes brothers (they are second best at number two,
twins) are seniors.
etc.) but there is no system to
Another concern of Birn- enforce the rule. It's also pretty
baum's is how the other difficult to discover even Of
coaches are going to approach there is a penalty."
the Raiders. "There area lot of Birnbaum expects to start
those teams tough is each of this season and I'm afraid some doubles player last year, in the
grab an upset."
