American Dynasty the topic of Research Club discussion
Mrs. H. W. Gardiner
I by Peter Collier and David
. Horowitz, at the morning
meeting of the Women's
Research Club Literature
P Department last-Thursday.
d This is the story of • an
U American Dynasty. It starts
Hwith the father who built the
il fortune, continues with the son
: who cleansed the name, goes on
Nto the brothers who
L manipulated both the name and
of fortune to their own. ends and
L concludes with the cousins who
P wish they had inherited neither,
a Through four generations the
a name has been synonymous
Lwith great wealth, through
• three generations with great
M works and now, in the fourth
SI generation" the dynasty has
n begun to crumble.
B It begins with Simon who
Mi amassed a fortune amid the
R disorder and hardships of the
bj Pennsylvania oil fields. Many
Si foundations and charities were
hi begun by the son. The story
P. goes on to trace the lives of the
fourth generation of cousins
who have repudiated the
wealth. This genecation is
groping for its own identity as
the dynastic power recedes. An
era is ending.
After lunch .a -talk on
lithographs and prints by
Currier and Ives' was given by
Mrs. Albert Zambone, sul>
stitutingfor Mrs. Stuart Taylor.
Currier began this art in the
18OO's. In December of 1835,. 14
acres of New York City was
destroyed and Currier made
lithographs of the disaster. He
made pictures of anything that
would interest people. He
acquired a national reputation.
Ives joined him in 1857 as a
junior partner.
Many pictures were done in
series such as four-seasons,^
different times of the day, etc.
Each seemed to sense what the
public wanted and thousands of
pictures were made and sold or
even given away. They
originated mottos such as' 'God 1
Bless Our Home" and recorded
through their pictures .the
history of a country growing up.
Some were garish but others
were works of art.
In time the lithographs were
considered old fashioned and
out of style. Then collectors
began looking for them and now
the originals are worth a great
deal of money and even the
reproductions are prized.
