team's 5-4 victory over
Southern-Regional in the
leason's opener last week. But
the second year coach just,
wishes he could keep his team
in New Jersey for most of the
season'.
"First Joe Myers misses two
weeks of practice with a trip to
Florida." Rinck said, 'and now
four other team'members are
heading South." While Rinck
• conceded "that Myers threw
often enough in Florida to keep
his arm strong, he feels that the
other departing starters will
have to play themselves back
into the lineup They include
starters Tim Chatburn and
Danny Foglio. who missed the
opening game, and Gary
Jernee and Nelson Dice, who
are both basking in the sun thjs
"Jerneeand Dice won't.miss
any games," their coach ex-
plained, "but missing all that
practice won't help them. It's
my feeling that anybody who
takes off on vacation during the
season will have to start all
over again when he gets back. I
really do expect them to win
back their starting spots' but
DIAMOND HUDDLE—Ocean City baseball coach Bud Rinck (facing camera)
talks with his team during last week's 5-4 win over Southern Regional in the
season's opener. The Raider's start Cape-Atlantic League play next Wednesday at
Wildwood Catholic.
The Raiders, behind Myers'
four-hit pitching, proved they
were capable of some good
things this season in the narrow
win over the Rams. Shortstop
Mike Calise, an All-Group Two
choice last year, reached base
four times, twice on singles, to
propel the Ocean City offense.
Actually, the visiting Rams
put the pressure on the Raiders
right away with two runs in the
first inning Myers put both
aboard with walks, they advanced
with the double steal
and scored on the combination
of a passed ball and a fielder's
choice. "That play at the plate
on the passed ball was really
debatable," Rinck said. "Mike
Sherman (Raider catcher) got
the ball to Joey in plenty of time
for the tag and we thought the
runner left the base line to
avoid him. Of course, the
umpire didn't give us a vote in
the decision:"
Calise led off the Raider first
with a single but ended up on
second base when it was
misplayed by the Southern
outfielder. Jernee then walked
and both advanced on a wild
pitch. Calise scored the first
Ocean City run on a ground ball
by Danny Doerr.
The Raiders went ahead in
. the second, inning when, both..
Dice and Bill Engel drew bases
p3ssccl belli. First sticker Brfld
Burkett then singled home
Engel to tie the score and Dice
was chased home by Calise's
second hit. That gave Myers a
3-2 lead.
A leadoff error in the
Southern fifth led to the third
Ram run and tied the score. But
the Raiders stormed back with
two runs in their half of the fifth
to take the lead for keeps.
Calise and Doerr drew walks
in the Raider fifth with the
speedy shortstop then stealing
third. Doerr advanced to
second on another stolen base
and both romped home when
Myers' ground ball went for an
error.
Southern threatened in the
seventh, scoring once and
moving another player to
second, before Myers claimed
his 10th strikeout victim to end
the game. The 6-1 lefty walked
four.
Rinck felt that Myers, who
