last .week but he just wishes the.
Greyhounds came a bit later on
his 1977 track schedule. "I don't
want to take anything away
from Pleasantville (a 31-pmnl
winner over the Raiders) but
we are. going to be a much
tougher team as each week
goes by. I'll have to admit,
however, that it would take a
top effort to beat them."
The Raiders got top efforts in
a 77-49 win over Lower Cape
May and a 91-34 conquest of
Wildwood. The pair of victories
evened their overall record at 2-
2 and gives them a realistic shot
at the Cape May County
championship two weeks from'
Saturday.
Senior Joe Newsome doubled
against Wildwood, beating
Wildwood's Mike Gaines in the
100 yard dash and taking the
javelin. Todd Lauer completed
a sweep of the sprints by
winning the 220 and tying
Gaines in the long jump.
Dan Hughes had a good meet,
winning the 330 yard in-
termediate hurdles and adding
a second and a third in other
events. Rick North won the 120
yard high hurdles and junior
Steve Gillin jumped 5-10 to
capture the high jump.
Danny Canova won the pole
vault against the Warriors,
despite an injury, ard Hughes
jumper! in to take, a second,
Eddie Leone, another top
Raider vaulter, was out with ah
ankle sprain..

third in the shot and Joe Polak
took second in the discus.
Lauer doubled, winning the
100 and 220, against Lower Cape
May with Edwards (mile).
Palmer (440). Polak (discus),
Newsome (javelin), Gillin
(high jump) and Mark Mintzer
(880) all finishing first
North took the 120 hurdleB at
Pleasantville with .Palmer
taking the 880. Lauer the 220
and Gillin the high jump. "That
was a tough meet," Colman
. said, "and I'm not sure anyone
will beat Pleasantville. Of
course, its no fun at their
track."
This afternoon (4 pm) the
Raiders meet Atlantic City at
the Recreation Center oval. It
means a lot to Colman since he

Super senior Don Barton
stretched his singles winning
streak over South Jersey op-
ponents to 48 recently while
helping Ocean City improve its'
record to 5-0.
The Raiders shut out Wild-
wood and Wildwood Catholic, 5-
0, and then edged Vineland, 3-2.
Barton, 50-2 in singles over
three seasons, has not lost a set
this year. At one point last year
he won 46 straight sets. Ranked
number three in the State,
Donny earned a 6-2, 6-0 win
against Wildwood and a perfect
6-0, 6-0 victory.over Wildwood
Catholic. He defeated Vineland
by a 6-2, 6-0 count.
Meanwhile, Barton's two
singles partners, both juniors,
were also three-time winners.
Number two man Tom Dawson

Wildwood Catholic, 64, 6-1.
Dawson. now 4-1 on the year,
then topped Vineland, 6-2, 6-2.
Scott McTigue, unbeaten in
the number three spot through
five matches, added a 6-0, 6-0
win over Wildwood, a 6-1. 6-1
victory against Wildwood
Catholic and a tough 44,7-5,6-3
rally against Mike Morenter of
Vineland. Scott's third set win
gave the Raiders the point they
needed to win the match.
The doubles teams, which
Coach Phil Birnbaum has said
will ultimately determine the
success of this team in many
matches, had mixed results.
Senior John Seidel and
sophomore Jay Zolltr ran their
record to 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win
against Wildwood and another
straight set victory over
Wildwood Catholic. They lost, 6*
3, 64 against Vineland.
Birnbaum has been switching
his second doubles team around
all season, trying to get some
younger'players some needed
experience and overcome in-
juries. #«
