PAGE 8 — SECTION THREE OCEAN CITY SENTINEL-LEDGER THURSDAY. APRIL 28,1977
Raiders lose two straight;
Faced with an uphill battle
. For only the second time in
history Ocean City High
School's softball team lost two
consecutive Cape-Atlantic
League games this past week.
The Raiders, who dropped into
fourth place, were beaten, 11*10
by Pleasantville and, 4-2, by
Wildwood. Coach Sue Tridico
feels her girb bounced back
well against Sacred Heart
Monday afternoon for a 21-1
win.
The Raiders are 4-3 through
seven games, 4-2 in the CAL.
They are also in the midst of a
very important trio of games.
"We have to win them all,"
Tridico said of her games with
Middle Township (yesterday),
Buena (tomorrow) and
Hammonton •(Monday), "and I
think we can do it. The team
was sloppy (seven errors)
agahst Pleasantville and lost
timing at the plate against
Wildwood. But we played our
best game of the year against
Sacred Heart and we are
ready."
Pitcher Wendy Burman, a
three-time All-CAL selection,
had been struggling until
Monday. The fastballing senior
had problems finding the plate
but limited the Lions to a pair of
singles, striking out nine.
Wendy helped her own cause
with a double. Stephanie
Vanderslice, Leddy Slaughter,
Kim Franklin and Anne Brinkmann
also collected two base
hits in the 13-hit Raider attack.
But the hits weren't there
against Wildwood. Coach
Peggy Picketts, who guided her
Warriors to the State Group
One championship last year,
•moved Tracy Hall onto the
mound for the first time and her
off-speed delivery caused the
Raiders all kinds of problems.
"They just couldn't time those
lob pitches," Tridico said.
"Every hitter we sent up- tried
to murder the ball because it
came in there looking so big.
We ended up hitting easy outs
or'missing completely."
Ocean City did manage six
hits off Hall, three of them by
Slaughter, but Wildwood made
better use of its four hits off
Burman. Donna 'Frederick
blasted the first home run over
the local fence this season and
Lisa Schultz chased home two
runs with a single and double.
Sally Strange wasted a
perfect five-for-five day at the
plate against Pleasantville
when the Raiders committed
seven errors and pitchers
Burman and Vanderslice
issued nine free passes between
them. Jenny Casey smacked a
triple for the Raiders, who
outhit the Greyhounds girls, 19-
12.
Janet Schminke chased home
three runs with a bases loaded
double in Pleasantville's sevenrun
sixth. Kim Gayle and
winning pitcher Donna Whittaker
each drove home two
runs, Gayle getting a double.
Yesterday the Raiders faced
Middle Township in the first of
the three "must win" games.
Tomorrow Buena, ranked 8th in
South Jersey by the Courier-
Post, will come to visit and
Hammonton travels to the local
field (6th and Haven) on
Monday afternoon. All three of
More than just a winner
It wasn't just because he won 277 basketball games at Ocean City
High School that Dixie Howell was honored by the AtlantleChapter
of Basketball Officials last Saturday night.
Those victories, third highest in the area's history and highest in
Cape-Atlantic League history, were important, especially when
you compare them with only 69 losses. .
Dixie wasn't honored just
because of the eight straight
Cape-Atlantic League championships,
an accomplishment
not yet equalled in any other
sport by any other coach.
It wasn't the three South
Jersey championships, two of
which led to state titles, that
caused the referees to honor
Dixie Howell.
It wasn't even the impressive
list of players whom he
developed and sent forward in
red and white. Guys like Ken
Leary, John Moore, Mike
Fadden, John Cranston, Joe
Kennedy, Frank Wickes, Gary
Satrappe, Charles Baker,
Randy Fox, Butch Krattenmaker,
Dave Beyel, Jim
Bernosky, Barry Banks, Larry
Harrison, Wayne Hudson, Tom DIXIE HOWELL
Adams and many more.
It wasn't even the dedication that he brought to Ocean City
basketball, demonstrated by the Saturday mornings he would
spend with the junior high school and grammar school kids who
later became part of his winning tradition. And the many yean
when he coached both the junior varsity and varsity basketball
teams all by himself.
The referees didn't select Dixie Howell 88 this year's Charles
Weiner Leadership winner because his Ocean City teams won 46
straight CAL games over four seasons and 56 consecutive regular
season contests over three campaigns.
It wasn't even the fact that three of his teams went through an
entire season and lost only one game, something Ocean City has not
done before or since. Three others lost only twice.
Through it all, through 16 seasons of directing Ocean City High
School basketball to a prominent spot in South Jersey, Dixie Howell
was always looking ahead. He taught fifth and sixth graders how to'
switch hands when dribbling around chairs and seventh and eighth
graders how to box out for the rebound.
When these young players reached high school he taught them
how to take advantage of their assets, whether that be size, speed
or a sharp shooting eye.
Dixie Howell's teams were not always the same. There were the
strong inside teams of Frank Wickes and Joe Kennedy, the smooth
teams of Mike Fadden, Tom Adams and John Cranston, plus the
super-aggressive teams of Ken Leary, Butch Krattenmaker,
Randy Fox and Barry Banks.
They all knew how to play the game and they all played it very
well. But, most important of aH, they all knew that Dixie Howell
had a stake in their futureand was interested in them as more than
just a name in the scorebook.
Ocean City High School has been very lucky in the coaching
arena. People like Fenton Carey, Mike Slaveski, Wilbur Clark,
Fred Haack, John Cervino and many others, both past and present,
have helped establish the school's reputation for pride and
determination.
Dixie Howell had lots of winners. His teams accomplished many**
ner. He was a friend to every young man who wore "Ocean City"
across his chest.
And THAT is the main reason they honored him last Saturday
night! - •
