Area students enrolled in

display their talents Sunday
(May l) in a student recital
ranging from Bach to Broadway.
Hie recital will begin at 4

Mays Landing campus. Admission

Guard Cutter Sassafras
homeported at the Coast Guard
Training Center here since
1944, has steamed out fit Cold
Spring Harbor for the last time,
bound for the Coast Guard Yard
at Curtis Bay. Md, for
renovation. . • ^
The ocean-going buoy tender's
crew of 48 men will be
reassigned to duty on board
Sassafras' replacement, the
cutter Hornbeam, which will
arrive here for duty next
month.
The 180-foot Sassafras
maintained approximately 90
buoys, lighted and unlighted,
from Manasquan, N. J. to Ocean
City, Md., including those aids
located in the Delaware River.

opens Saturday
' ATLANTIC CITY—Historic
Gardner's Basin will officially
open for the season on
Saturday, May 28. This day will
also see an art exhibition in the
Park's sculpture garden, from
10 a.m. til 4 p.m.
Sponsored Dy the Atlantic
County Cultural and Heritage
Advisory Board, the exhibition
will feature scenes of Gardner's
Basin executed in all forms of
media.
All artists may go to
Gardner's Basin from now until
May 26th to paint, sketch, sculpt
or photograph anything at the
historic waterfront, if they will
obtain a pass by contacting
Mrs. Florence Miller. 205 N.
Montpeiler, Atlantic City.
Art show subjects should be
focused on Gardner's Basin and
seafaring, maritime and historic
waterfront village type of
material, Mrs. Miller,
executive director of the
Atlantic City Art Center,
pointed out.
"Artists may also submit
paintings not necessarily of
waterfront subjects, though the
thrust of the show will be shore,
meadow and maritime scenes,"
Mrs. Miller said. "Still-lifes will
be accepted, too. This will
enable exhibiting artists a
chance for sales in all area."
Artists will exhibit on
Saturday, May 28, Sunday, May
29, and Monday, May 30,
Memorial Day weekend.
Registration fee is $2. The
pass for working artists to paint
at Gardner's Basin will cost an
additional $2.

She has worked closely with
the National Oceanographic
and Atmospheric'Agency, the
Environmental Protection
Agency, and the Army Corps of
Engineers! The Sassafras has
• been deployed several times to
assist arid stand by groinded
tankers in their approaches to
Delaware Bay. '
In April of 1976, Sassafras
was awarded the Gold "E" for
excellence in' military
readiness for the fifth 'consecutive
time during underway
training at Little Greek, Va.
This accomplishment was the
first of any Coast Guard Cutter
on the East Coast.
Her replacement, Hornbeam,
which won fame in her
dramatic rescue of survivors of
the ill-fated liner "Andrea
Dorea," comes to Cape May
from Woods Hole, Ma.
Wildwood end of line
Phone switchboard finally laid to rest
New Jersey Bell on April IS
retired its last remaining cordtype
telephone switchboard,
with the closing of the company's
Wildwood toll office. The
occasion completes the company's
eight-year conversion to
electronic call-handling.
It marked the end of an era
for the telephone equipment
that started with the tradition
of "Hello Central," the local
darling of the telephone system
seated before an entangled web
of plug-ended cords. New
Jersey Bell operators
throughout the state now
handle calls from electronic,
computerized-consoles, called
Traffic. Service Position
Systems (TSPS).
TSPS enables customers to
dial directly calls that formerly
had to be dialed by an operator,
such as person-to-person,
collect, credit card and chargeto-third
number calls. TSPS
also allows direct dialing of
long distance calls from coin
phones and hotels.
New Jersey Bell began its
conversion to TSPS in 1969,
when the nation's first TSPS
was placed into service in
Morristown. Since then the
company has opened five other
TSPS complexes, in Rochelle
Park, North Brunswick,
Camden, -Newark and
Hamilton. These complexes
include 17 operator offices
throughout the state.
"TSPS offers New Jersey
Bell customers the fastest,
most reliable service for
handling their telephone calls,"
said Gerard E. Dalton, the
company's general traffic
manager. "It's the most advanced
machine in the country
for operator services.
"TSPS completes calls about
one-third faster than the cordtype
switchboard," Dalton
said. "The average time it
takes an operator to complete a
call now is less than half a
minute."
TSPS also has revolutionized
the job of the telephone
operator.
"Because it is computerized,
TSPS performs most of the
routine details of recording call
information and establishing
connections. This frees
operators to devote most of
their time to satisfying our
customers," Dalton said.
Operators sit at clusters of
futuristic-looking consoles,
with arrays of multi-colored
buttons and small display
screens. Instead of inserting
plugs and cords, the operator
pushes buttons.
The TSPS screen displays the
calling and called numbers of a
toll call and computes billing
information and coin phoneovertime
charges, taking Into'
account the time of day and
appropriate taxes. The system
also automatically distributes
Disaster survival test
on national television

Hise, acting director of the
State Division of Civil Defense-
Disaster Control, urges the
public to participate in a
televised National Disaster
Survival Test.
The test will be presented on
the NBC Television Network
(Channel 3 or 4) Sunday, May 1,
at 8 p.m. According to the

public, home, and industrial, as
well as traffic - all within the
context of disasters, large and
small."
Actual disaster film footage
taken from Civil Defense films
will be included in the
presentation, as well as interviews
with disaster survivors
and survival experts.
It will concentrate on what
people can do for personal
protection. The objective is to
reduce the potential for
casualties and property
damage in the future.
In the National Disaster
Survival Test, questions on
potential peace-time hazards
and what can be done about
them will be posed to a crosssection
of Americans in four
major U.S. cities. Five
presentation, discussion, and
report desks- at a central
location will be concerned with
survival of hazards created by
(1) water, (2) wind. (3) ice and
sun, (4) fire, and (5) earthquakes.
Electronic tabulation of
responses by studio audiences
to test questions will be
reported during the program.
Test answers will be evaluated
on (a) judgment, (b)
knowledge, (c) alertness, (d)
stress, and (e) leadership.
Viewers may participate by
using a test form. The form will
be printed in the TV Guide and
other publications.
Van Hise said that free
publications on survival may be
obtained from CD-DC. The
State official also stated that
films on hurricanes, floods,
earthquakes, fires and other
disasters, are available from
CD-DC.

Holding down the company's
cost of providing service to the
customer is another benefit of
TSPS. A benefit that is passed
on to customers in speed and
lower cost. Several TSPS offices
can be shut down at night
when calling traffic is light and
calls switched to another TSPS
office in the complex. With cord
switchboards, all operator
offices had to remain open
around-the-clock, seven-days a
week.
New Jersey Bell is the first
major Bell System company to
convert completely to TSPS.
Just as New Jersey Bell was the
first to introduce TSPS back in
1969, it was also first to use
ESS, a computerized cental
office for switching telephone
calls. ESS made its nationwide
debut in Succasunna in 196$.
Developed by Bell
Laboratories and manufactured
by Western Electric,
TSPS and ESS are perfect
examples of how the Bell
System works together through
research, manufacturing and
day-to-day operation of
telephone service.
