person wants something,' he sees no quick way to get it
legitimately, or is convinced he can never earn it, so he takes the
gamble he can "take it" and get away with it.
In the minds of those who commit them, much of the thinking that
promotes crimes is evidently based on a defeatism involving the
complexities of life that make one believe, no matter how hard he
may try. it's no use, he can never win.
People, particularly the young and the poor, are prone to
impatience that becomes uncontrollable in a growing number of
what otherwise might be termed normal citizens. More and more
people are assuming that their civil rights include the right to
instant success and immediate social affluence equality.
When an employer advertises a job opening hundreds respond,
but the majority don't ask questions about the job, they ask things
nke what is the starting salary, how many hours a day must they
work, how soon will the automatic raises come, and how long are
the vacations. Less than 10 percent want to know details like, how
to qualify for advancement, the long range company objectives and
how they might fit into them. etc. We have become a people who
expect things to be handed to us, with as little effort as possible

Gambling -newsman's view
topic at Rotary meeting
Howard Berger, host of a
morning radio talk program,
presented the Rotary dub with
a "newsman's view of gambling,"
at the group's regular
weekly meeting last Thursday.
Berger said he was against
having to resort to gambling to
revitalize an important resort
like Atlantic City. He pointed
out that the advent of gambling
has led to plans by the State
Police to open a station in
Atlantic City staffed with 69
troopers and 30 civilians.
"This clearly indicates the
magnitude of the task of control
and enforcement as they see
it," Berger said, adding that
"there goes a big portion of the
10 percent tax against gross
revenue which is the state's
portion."
Berger said, however, that
there will be a "short time
construction boom" aa a result
of the casino gambling
referendum passed last
November.
He said legislators broke a
promise for shorter opening
hours when the casino gambling
committee passed a
package allowing gaming
houses to remain open 10 hours
during the week and 20 hours on
weekends and holidays.
Berger closed his message
with a warning to be on the
alert for the gambling's effects
on Ocean City.
"We will undoubtedly be
profoundly affected in ways
which can't be clearly seen,"
Berger said.
The Rotary Club meets every
Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in
Chichi's in Somers Point.
