Beyel is a candidate
for Township Committee
UPPER TOWNSHIP 1 —
Daniel Beyel officially announced
his candidacy for the
Township Committee at the
Saturday night dinner-dance of
the Upper . Township
Republican Club.
. The rf-year-old co-owner of
the Boulevard Liquor Store in
Marmora has the official
backing of the Petersburg
Republican Club here along
with several Cape May County
Republican leaders.
Beyel will be running for the
post being vacated by retiring
Democratic Committeeman
Charles Cossaboone.
The Upper Township
Democratic Club has endorsed
Thomas Wimberg, owner of
Palermo Memorials,. for the
same post and he is expected to
run unopposed in the June
Primary.
.-In addition to receiving the
Republican Club endorsement,
Beyel received support for his
bid for the Committee post
.from State Sen. James Cafiero;
Cape May County Republican
Organization Chairman, Philip
R. Matalucci;. incumbent
Freeholder candidate Gerald
Thornton, and incumbent
County Clerk candidate Angie
Pulvino.
"Dan Beyel is 100 percent
Republican," Matalucci said in
his endorsement, "and with
Dan on the ticket, we have a 100
percent Republican ticket and a
winning one at that."
Upper Township Republican
Club President Thomas Griffin
noted that Beyel "has the youth
plus the business experience
and good educational
background that will make him
an outstanding member of the
Upper Township Committee."
Beyel is a 1966 graduate of
Ocean City High School and
received his bachelor of science
'degree in business administration
from Drexel
University in Philadelphia.
He is a member of the
executive board of the Cape
May County March of Dimes
and serves as treasurer of the
Tuckahoe Rod and Gun Club.

you may see a tree crab, you
may see a tree crab across a
crowded beach..."
These are the introductory
lyrics to the official Martin Z.
Mollusk song to be chortled at
the 9th st. beach, here on May
19, 11 a.m.
And who is Martin Z.
Mollusk?
To his many fans throughout
Tree Crabdom, it is inconceivable
that you don't
know. But for those pt you who
have been out of the country for
the past three years, Martin is
Ocean City's relatively famous
Hermit Tree Crab who makes it
a practice to predict exactly
when summer will arrive at
this family resort.
Here's how it's done. The
shellfish is gingerly lowered to
the beach at the stroke of 11
a.m. by Mayor B. Thomas
Waldman If Martin sees his
shadow, summer comes one
week earjy to Ocean City. If no
shadow is visible, summer
arrives on time.
The special song lyrics to the
tune of "Some Enchanted
Evening" were requested by
Martin who is addicted to
pageantry and insists that a
"big deal" be made of his entrance
on the beach. The song
will be professional? rendered
by three hula dancers in grass
skirts who will greet Martin
with an authentic miniature lei
which they will deposit over his
crusty shell. Once that is accomplished,
the Ocean City
High School Band will burst
forth with a lively rendition of
"Pomp and Circumstance,"
which was Martin's favorite
tune until the creation of "Some
Enchanted Morning."
In addition to the leis, Martin
will sport a top hat and be
formally decked out in a tux for
his visit to the beach. The
traditional sign proclaiming
"Martin Mollusk Crept Here,
May 19,1977" will be inserted
into the sand by two beach
lackeys recruited for the day.
In addition to predicting the
weather, the City's renowned
shellfish presides over the
annual Hermit Tree Crab Race
and Hermit Tree Crab Beauty
Pageant in August.
These two events are held on
the same day (August 17). Over
ISO tree crabs participate in the
run anfl scores of gorgeous
